Firewood collection - River Red Gum Parks

The Autumn Firewood Collection Season for 2020 opened across Victoria on Sunday 1 March. Information about collection sites and updates, including interactive maps showing designated collection areas is available at www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood

Firewood collection at Barmah Island closed for the Autumn Firewood Collection Season on Friday 8 May as the allocated supply of firewood has been collected. To preserve habitat for wildlife, there will be no firewood collection at Barmah Island beyond the 2020 Autumn season.

Parks Victoria also manages a domestic firewood collection area at Robinvale in the state’s north west. Access to firewood in Robinvale is only available to residents of the Mildura Rural City and Swan Hill Rural City.

Domestic firewood on public land is a limited resource that needs to be carefully managed.

Many animals rely on fallen timber and tree hollows for habitat. Crevices under logs and hollows in trees provide safe places for mammals, reptiles, birds and invertebrates to live and are the perfect place to protect their young from predators. Fallen timber and tree hollows also have value far beyond basic shelter, providing food resources and recycling nutrients in the ecosystem as it decays.
