Bushfire mitigation works commence at Haining Farm

Tuesday 12 February, 2019

Bushfire mitigation works have commenced at Haining Farm to ensure the development of the site incurs no net increase in bushfire risk to the community.

The works have been planned in partnership with CFA and are specified in the Haining Farm Bushfire Mitigation Measures document which is available on the Engage Victoria website.

Bushfire mitigation works include:

  • A fuel break around the perimeter of the site
  • Installation of an internal trail network for fire response vehicles
  • Improving water accessibility for fire response vehicles
  • An open woodland buffer on the north and east of the site.

Revegetation efforts also continue in the park with animal, plant and soil experts assisting with the restoration of habitat for the Helmeted Honeyeater and Lowland Leadbeater’s Possum, two of Victoria’s most endangered species. Further revegetation will continue in stages throughout summer and autumn 2019.

A summary of the community engagement conducted in August 2018 is now available on Engage Victoria detailing the outcomes of the feedback sought on the park’s detailed design. Parks Victoria will continue to work with the local community to seek input and provide updates on the project. A community open day and planting session are planned for autumn 2019.

Quotes attributable to Victoria Purdue, Parks Victoria District Manager, Dandenong Ranges and Yarra Valley Ranges:

“These works will ensure the careful balance between conservation, fire risk mitigation and access for community recreation and education.

“Parks Victoria will continue to work closely with the community and partners throughout the development process to ensure that Haining Farm reflects the needs of the community”
