Speed limit reductions at Twelve Apostles

Monday 30 September, 2019

Additional traffic and pedestrian safety measures are being introduced at the Twelve Apostles, Port Campbell National Park, as Parks Victoria expects higher than normal visitor numbers over the Grand Final and Melbourne Cup long weekends.

Parks Victoria Rangers and traffic controllers will be onsite to improve the flow of traffic and pedestrians with the aim to optimise the visitor experience.  The prevention of illegal and unsafe parking will also be a focus.

Speed limit reductions will come into effect from Friday 27 to Sunday 29 September and again from Saturday 2 to Tuesday 5 November, with vehicles slowed to 40km on the Great Ocean Road around the Twelve Apostles visitor centre and the nearby Gibson Steps.

The changes are part of an annual traffic and visitor management plan that in past years has successfully coordinated more than 125,000 cars, 14,000 mini-buses and 1,000 coaches over peak periods.

While popular year-round, Parks Victoria is expecting up to 9,000 people daily during the Grand Final and Melbourne Cup long weekends.  These numbers increase to 15,000 people daily during the week between Christmas and the New Year, the Chinese New Year festival, and the Easter long weekend.

People visiting the area are encouraged to allow additional time for their trip, observe traffic conditions and follow the direction of Park Rangers and Traffic Controllers.

Quotes attributable to Parks Victoria, Project Coordinator, Darren Shiell:

“To reduce congestion around the Twelve Apostles, we’re implementing a traffic management plan during the three days of the Grand Final long weekend.”

“A safe and enjoyable visit is our focus, so we’ll have extra staff out-and-about in the national park to welcome visitors and help manage the flow of vehicles and people.”

“Visitors can help Park Rangers by observing the traffic conditions, staying on formed paths when exploring the area, and remaining behind lookout barriers.”
