Modified access to protect Point Hicks Lighthouse entry road

Parks Victoria wishes to advise visitors that restrictions now apply to the access road leading to Point Hicks Lighthouse from the Thurra River campground.

Storm events over the past two years have resulted in considerable erosion to sections of the unsealed sandy road, so to maintain the road’s structural integrity, vehicle traffic will be limited for the foreseeable future.

Visitor safety is Parks Victoria’s top priority, only park management and escorted pre-booked guest vehicles will access the road. We will conduct daily road monitoring to ensure the reduction in vehicles is effective in maintaining the stability of the road.

Pre-booked accommodation guests are being contacted to notify them of the access modifications and to organise the escorted service to the lighthouse by Parks Victoria officers.

Day visitors, including hikers, cyclists and those on the wilderness hike will still be able to access the Point Hicks Lighthouse Reserve.  However, visitors will need to park their cars at the hikers car park which is at the end of the Thurra River campground and walk approximately 4km to reach the site.

Additionally, in the event of a severe storm warning, Parks Victoria will follow standard emergency management procedures and enact a temporary closure of the site to ensure we maintain the integrity, and longevity of the road.

Please contact Parks Victoria on 13 1963 or parks.vic.gov.au if you have any queries.
