Twelve Apostles Pipeline Project Completes Milestone

Friday 20 December, 2019

Parks Victoria has completed the first section of works ahead of schedule on an $8.6 million project to upgrade the sewage and water services at the Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre in the Port Campbell National Park.

Approximately 80 per cent of the dual pipeline connecting the Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre toilets to the Port Campbell sewage treatment plant and providing drinking water has been laid totaling just over 19kms and completing the major works along the Great Ocean Road.

Trenchless technology saw these pipelines laid with minimal impact made to the environment and provided efficiencies to the project resulting in the earlier than expected completion of this stage.

With visitation along the Great Ocean Road attracting 6.6 million people a year, and the iconic Twelve Apostles facilitating over 10,000 people a day in peak times, these important works will provide a long-term sustainable solution to growing visitor demand.

This connection supports the demand of increased visitation into the future.

The next phase of works will begin in early February after the holiday peak season and involve installing connecting infrastructure at each end of the pipeline. Works are on schedule to be complete by mid-2020.

The project is delivered in partnership with Wannon Water and is expected to provide income for the local economy with contractors utilising accommodation providers and supporting local businesses.

Quotes attributable to Western Regional Director, Jason Borg, Parks Victoria

“This long-term solution to provide drinkable water and sewage services will ensure the sensitive environment is protected at the Port Campbell National Park as visitor demand continues to grow.”

“The Twelve Apostles and the Shipwreck Coast continue to be a major draw-card for visitors and being able to provide a consistent supply of water will see us remove over 500 water delivery trucks from the road every year, improving visitor access to the iconic landscape.”
