Have your say on the future of Tower Hill
Friday 4 September, 2020
Parks Victoria is inviting the public to have its say on a Draft Activation and Linkages Plan for the Tower Hill State Game Reserve.
Developed in partnership with Regional Development Victoria and following engagement with key stakeholders and community, the draft plan sets a vision and recommended future direction for the reserve amid anticipated growth in visitation.
A former volcano, Tower Hill is a unique place, a scenic and immersive landscape that ignites a sense of exploration and discovery. Located on Eastern Maar Country, the wildlife and game reserve holds great social, cultural and geological significance. It supports an array of birds and animals, and has become a popular place for domestic and international visitors.
With proximity to the Great Ocean Road region and other significant cultural places, such as the UNESCO World Heritage listed Budj Bim Cultural Landscape, Tower Hill is becoming a known destination for visitors as part of a broader itinerary within Victoria’s south-west region.
Last year, more than 295,000 visitors visited the reserve, which has seen a steady increase in visitation over the past five years. This trend represents both an opportunity and a challenge, in terms of protecting the site and the core reason people are visiting.
There are opportunities to realise within Tower Hill Reserve, including improving its amenities and enhancing its profile as a key destination within the region.
The Draft Activation and Linkages Plan is now publicly available on Engage Victoria website: https://engage.vic.gov.au/revitalising-tower-hill-wildlife-reserve
Community members are invited to review the plan and provide their feedback up until 4 October via a survey or by making a submission.
Parks Victoria will also be holding an online community information session on Thursday 17 September, 5.30–7.00pm, where people will hear from the project team and be able to ask questions. Registration for this session can be made at https://engage.vic.gov.au/revitalising-tower-hill-wildlife-reserve or by calling 13 1963.
The Victorian Government recently announced $11.3 million for upgrades at Tower Hill Reserve as part of the $2.7 billion COVID-19 pandemic works stimulus package. This money will be used to achieve some of the initiatives outlined in this draft plan.
Tower Hill Reserve is currently closed due to coronavirus (COVID-19). Visitors to other parks and reserves are reminded of the public health measures in place across regional Victoria, including physical distancing, the wearing of face masks, and that there are only four reasons for leaving home.
