Point Cook Homestead Precinct

An investment of $1.5 million will fund a range of projects in the Point Cook Homestead precinct. These works will refurbish and maintain some of the heritage buildings on site, and a new toilet facility will be built.

Key information

Parks Victoria will deliver a project across the Point Cook Homestead Precinct with three main aims:

1. Install a connection to the City West Water sewer system to allow removal of existing septics
2. Design and construct a new, free-standing toilet facility
3. Complete maintenance and refurbishment works across heritage listed buildings and precinct

In addition, automatic gates have been installed at the entrance and an assessment of tree health across the precinct has occurred.

Sewer Connection

• Connecting wastewater facilities across the Point Cook Homestead Precinct to the City West Water sewer system will allow the removal of existing septic systems from the site.
• Removal of septic systems will reduce the risk of EPA compliance breaches, provide seamless management of wastewater, and better position Parks Victoria to meet commercial lease obligations in relation to the provision of amenities and infrastructure to service tenants, now and into the future.

Toilet Facility

• A new free-standing toilet facility will be constructed incorporating principles of Universal Design and Crime Prevention through Environmental Design to meet current and future demand for visitors of all ages and abilities.
• The new toilet facility will replace the existing facilities which no longer meet the standards expected for the site. Improved public toilets will ensure people from all ages and abilities can visit and enjoy this special part of Melbourne’s heritage.

Building Maintenance and Refurbishment

• Parks Victoria has recently completed assessments across all buildings within the Precinct to identified required maintenance and refurbishment requirements.
• These assessments, completed in conjunction with a Heritage Architect, will allow Parks Victoria to identify priority refurbishment, maintenance and upgrade works across critical precinct buildings and the Precinct grounds.
• These works will allow for future commercial and community opportunities, while fulfilling Heritage Victoria requirements.

Other information

The Point Cook Homestead Precinct is of state significance as a rare example of early Victorian rural architecture. The precinct is an area of 12.5-hectares contained within the 464-hectare Point Cook Coastal Park. The precinct includes buildings, garden and landscape listed by Heritage Victoria.

Parks Victoria is responsible for protecting more than 3,000 historic places and objects across the state. This diverse collection is significant in representing key aspects of Victoria’s history.

Parks Victoria plays a stewardship role of sustainably managing these historic places on behalf of the community.
