School holiday safety a walk in the park
Tuesday 31 March, 2026
With school holidays approaching, hundreds of thousands of Victorians are preparing for a low-cost visit to one of Victoria’s 95 parks and reserves.
Bookable campsites are nearing 90 per cent capacity over the Easter break, following the Victorian Government’s $10.5m half price camping initiative.
And as the Bureau forecasts a mild autumn, there’s never been a better time to explore our state on a budget.
Parks Victoria rangers will be on the ground at locations across Victoria encouraging visitors to stay safe by taking a few easy precautions.
Be prepared. Nature is unpredictable. Plan ahead by checking the forecast, packing the right gear and bringing plenty of water.
Plan your visit. Visit the Parks Victoria website before you leave, match activities to your abilities, fitness and stamina and allow enough extra time to reach your destination.
Stay on track. Be safe and protect the environment by not straying from marked tracks and designated visitor areas. Follow directions from park rangers and signage.
Be fire safe. Not all campgrounds allow campfires so check the park signs before lighting up. If allowed have enough water handy to completely extinguish your campfire before you leave.
Keep your distance. Wildlife is just that – wild. Don't approach, keep your distance, and ensure children also stay back.
Authorised Officers from Victoria’s Conservation regulator will also be on the ground patrolling state forests to help protect biodiversity and keep visitors safe.
