Blackwood Regional Park protects forest landscapes surrounding the historic township of Blackwood in central Victoria. Formed from areas of the former Wombat State Forest, the park combines natural bushland, recreation sites and historic locations that reflect the region's long connection to mining, settlement and forest recreation.
The park's landscape is characterised by mixed eucalypt forest, fern-filled gullies, creek environments and forested ridgelines. These environments provide opportunities for visitors to experience nature while exploring a landscape shaped by both natural processes and historic land use.
The history of the Blackwood district is closely tied to the Victorian gold rush. Tracks, former mining areas and associated heritage features remain part of the landscape today. Walking routes within and adjoining the park provide opportunities to discover this history while exploring the surrounding bushland.
Jack Cann Reserve is one of the park's key visitor destinations. Set among towering Messmate Stringybark and remnant pine trees, the reserve provides picnic facilities and access to a number of walking opportunities. It serves as the starting point for both the Lerderderg Heritage River Walk and Whipstick Loop Walk, which lead visitors through forest environments, fern-filled gullies and historic landscapes associated with the Simmons Reef goldfields.
Blackwood Regional Park provides opportunities for walking, picnicking, nature observation and exploring the natural and cultural heritage of the Blackwood district in a peaceful bushland setting.
