Point Cook Homestead Precinct restoration project

About the project

Point Cook Homestead is a bluestone residence within Point Cook Coastal Park that was built in 1857.

The Homestead is a significant historical site for Melbourne’s western suburbs.

The site has been closed to the public since 2015 after the previous operator went into liquidation.

Parks Victoria recognises the community’s interest in the site and is committed to restoring the Homestead as a place that locals and visitors can enjoy again.

Parks Victoria has invested around $1.5 million (2020–2021) in essential upgrades at the site, including sewer connection, new toilets, and heritage-sensitive maintenance.

Project status

October 2025

In late 2024 the Homestead was damaged by vandalism. Parks Victoria has since taken steps to secure and protect the buildings while further restoration plans progress.

  • Security measures: The Homestead has been boarded up, fitted with a monitored alarm, a CCTV system has been installed to monitor both the Homestead and the Stables, and signage installed to advise that camera surveillance is active.
  • Insurance assessments: The Victorian Managed Insurance Authority (VMIA) has approved the scope of repair works, including replacement and repair of all windows, frames and doors that were damaged by vandalism.
  • Temporary closure: After repair works are completed, the Homestead will remain boarded up to prevent further damage until the site is re-activated.

Planning for the future

An assessment of the work required to restore the Homestead has been completed. Restoration costs are expected to be in the range of several million dollars, depending on the future use and type of activation.

Parks Victoria is working closely with Wyndham City Council and local community groups to explore options for protecting, restoring and reopening the site.

Representatives attended a community meeting on 22 September 2025 to hear feedback and ideas for the Homestead’s potential future use, including as a community hub.

Work to repair and protect the Homestead will:

  • prevent further vandalism and deterioration
  • ensure the heritage status of the site is protected
  • prepare the site for public access and use by the community
  • protect the site’s surrounding environmental values within the coastal park.

Next steps

  • Finalise heritage and statutory approvals for the insurance repair works.
  • Deliver approved repairs to the Homestead.
  • Complete asbestos removal and fencing repairs.
  • Continue engagement with Wyndham City Council and the community on long-term activation options.
