Upper Murray Bushfire Recovery
Parks Victoria is treating hazards, re-opening tracks and reconstructing and repairing campgrounds and visitor facilities following major bushfire damage in summer 2019/20.
The recovery work is large in scale, particularly within Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park and the roads and tracks within the Alpine National Park, including the iconic Mt Pinnibar area.

- Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
Approximately 95% of the park was impacted, with the loss of facilities (toilets, tables etc.) at all campgrounds, loss of walking track infrastructure (footbridges etc.) and subsequent track scouring from storms and rain events, loss of signage, significant numbers of burnt and hazardous trees and safety issues due to rock fall on unstable slopes bare of vegetation. - Mount Mitta Mitta Regional Park
Park is open but some work still to be completed. - Murray River Reserve
All campgrounds and visitor sites have reopened after the fire but some work on tracks still to be completed. Some campgrounds have been affected by recent floods. - Alpine National Park
Major impacts to roads and tracks, many burnt and hazardous trees, loss of signage and visitor infrastructure at Glen Dart, tracks through the nearby Mount Gibbo and Wild Boar Range Natural Feature and Scenic Reserves were heavily impacted. - Wabba Wilderness Park
Park closed due to tree hazards.
What is being delivered
Mount Mitta Mitta (Mittamatite) Regional Park
- Safety works at visitor sites, in particular treatment of hazardous trees
- Replacement of signage
- Track reforming, culvert re-establishment and drainage
- Improve carpark at southern end of Mittamatite Regional Park
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
- Assessment of infrastructure damage and safety issues continuing
- Planning for facility and signage replacement and upgrade.
Recent completed works include
Murray River Reserve
- Damaged fences replaced
- Tree hazards removed.
Alpine National Park
- Works on the Tom Groggin Track, the Murray River ford at Tom Groggin Station and Davies Plain Track
- Hazardous tree treatment works completed in the Mt Anderson and Indi River areas
- Hazardous trees work and reforming of damaged tracks at Mt Pinnibar and Mt Gibbo area
- Surveyors Creek area – tree hazard works completed.
Mount Mitta Mitta (Mittamatite) Regional Park
- Emberys Lookout picnic facilities replaced
- Hazardous tree works along tracks.
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
- Hazardous tree works along Pine Mountain Track completed
- Pine Mountain Walking Track hazardous tree removal and clearing completed.
Expected project duration and key dates
- Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park early 2022
- Partial opening of Bluff Creek – Bluff Falls precinct late 2021.
Project funding
- Recovery works are funded through a mix of Parks Victoria's operating budget, and work performed under the Working4Victoria program, and insurance.
