Community sport going green at Albert Park

Thursday 6 June, 2024

Local sport clubs are a step closer to enjoying green energy thanks to a solar power initiative being rolled out across Albert Park.

A $1.6 million investment by the Victorian Government will see solar panels installed at over 8 facilities used by many of the park’s community sports clubs.

The green energy project will help reduce emissions and assist local sports organisations to save on their utility bills – putting money back into club’s pockets.

Engineers assessed all buildings across the park to understand which were most suitable for works. Successful clubs can expect panels to be installed in late 2024.

Located on Bunurong Country, Albert Park is a hub for the local area’s growing community sports clubs - home to more than 40 clubs, with 6,000 members, across 16 different land and water sports.

To help prepare and support this growth, a range of other projects are also progressing at the park.

This includes the Albert Park Sports Management Plan, which will help shape the future of community sports at the park.

Developed by Parks Victoria in consultation with the community, local sports clubs, the City of Port Phillip and the Australian Grand Prix Corporation - the draft plan will support the long-term use of the park. It looks at everything from planning and programming to sports grounds and pavilions, and improving recreational opportunities.

We’re currently reviewing feedback and will finalise the plan in mid-2024. To view the draft Sports Management Plan, visit: https://engage.vic.gov.au/albert-park-sports-management-plan.

Parks Victoria’s Regional Director of Melbourne, Sofia De Lesantis, highlights the importance of the projects “by supporting community sport at Albert Park, these projects are helping to ensure it remains a special place where Melburnians can get into nature and participate in a range of community sports.”

This builds upon a recent $5 million Federal Government investment to deliver a range of Sports Facility Improvement Projects. Upgrading changerooms, sports fields and sailing amenities - the projects will uplift the park’s ageing facilities, ensuring they are fit-for-purpose and support increasing female participation in sport at Albert Park.
