Autumn in Victoria is bursting with wild adventures perfect for curious kids and grown-ups. From finding ancient fossils with real palaeontologists to helping to protect penguins and rare birds, these four hands-on citizen science events bring nature to life.
Citizen science engages kids in real-world discovery, building their curiosity, critical thinking, and connection to nature. It turns learning into active contribution, showing kids they can make a difference. This autumn, explore hidden bushlands, meet wildlife experts, and even spot a wild penguin along the way. Whether you're a budding birdwatcher or just love being outdoors, there's something amazing waiting for you.

1. Dinosaur discovery: the amazing Koolasuchus
Location: Inverloch
Time and date: Friday April 25 2025, 1:00PM – approx. 3:00 PM
Ages: Best for school-aged kids and teens
Cost: Adults and children (5-18 years): $22, children under 5 years old: Free.
Walk in the footprints of ancient giants! Join fossil legend Mike Cleeland, discover Victoria’s state fossil emblem Koolasuchus, and try your luck at finding real fossils at the Dinosaur Dreaming sites. Start at the Bunurong Environment Centre, visit the Koolasuchus sculpture, and explore real fossil areas with Mike! Bring sturdy shoes, your sense of adventure, and get ready to uncover the ancient secrets beneath your feet.

2. St Kilda Little Penguin habitat cleanup
Location: St Kilda, Melbourne.
Time and date: Sunday May 4 2025, 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM
Ages: All ages (kids must be supervised)
Cost: Free (registration required)
Help protect Melbourne’s cutest locals! Join local conservationists to clean up litter from the St Kilda Breakwater, home to a much-loved colony of Little Penguins. Kids can learn how plastic pollution affects wildlife and do their part to keep penguin nests safe and snug. Gloves, vests, and equipment provided, just bring water, sunscreen, and closed-toed shoes.

3. Mornington Peninsula beach-nesting birds end-of-season celebration
Location: Flinders
Time and dates: Friday 9 May, 2025 9:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Ages: 12+ recommended. All ages (kids must be supervised)
Cost: $10 on entry at the venue. This is a donation or join the Friends of the Hooded Plover Mornington Peninsula Inc. for one year.
Meet a birding legend and protect one of Victoria’s rarest birds! Sean Dooley, author of The Big Twitch and BirdLife Australia’s Public Affairs Manager, joins local experts from Parks Victoria, Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action, and Friends of the Hooded Plover. Hear their stories, ask questions, and find out how you can help these endangered beach-nesting birds.
4. Pram Walk and Talk – Serendip Sanctuary
Location: Serendip Sanctuary
Time and date: April 29 2025, 9:30 AM – 11:30 AM
Ages: All ages (kids must be supervised)
Cost: Free event – bookings essential (children do not require a ticket)
Enjoy a gentle, interpretive tour along a pram-friendly track and spark curiosity with a sensory nature experience. Discover the unique plants and wildlife that call Serendip Sanctuary home and meet and connect with other local families.
Please note: This event is tailored for families with toddlers and young children.
