New walking trails open at Jells Park

Tuesday 29 July, 2025

Two new shared-use trails at Jells Park are now open to the public. Made up of a mix of new and resurfaced existing track, the two trails provide visitors with more opportunities to access and exercise in the park.

Funded by $5.9 million investment from the Victorian Government, the shared-use trails enable visitors to walk, run or cycle along the tracks, taking in views of Jells Lake and the open green spaces of the park.

The shorter "Lake Trail," approximately 2.5 km long, includes a new asphalt path, solar lighting, drinking fountains, seating, bicycle repair station and safety signage.

The Lake Trail was developed following community consultation. The trail loops around the café and playspaces, and showcases great views of the lake. It has a focus on safety, ensuring the space can be enjoyed by all park users.

The longer "Bushland Trail," about 5 km in length, offers a more natural experience with sections of gravel path, along with drinking fountains, seating, and instructional/safety signage.

The community was consulted in 2022, and their feedback has helped to shape the final designs – ensuring the trails meet the expectations and needs of park users.

Parks Victoria's Regional Director for Melbourne, Sofia De Lesantis, said she was excited to see this project open and with the community’s views incorporated.

“The shared-use trails provide visitors with a wonderful opportunity to get active and explore the outdoors by walking, running or cycling through the park’s many different green spaces.”

Jells Park is a much-loved park in Melbourne’s south-east, offering plenty of opportunities to soak up the benefits of being in nature. It features fantastic contemporary playspaces, great access for visitors with diverse needs, big open spaces for exercise and several picnic areas for recreation.

In addition to the two new walking trails, the Victorian Government has also replaced two jetties at Jells Park and the Oaks playground has been recently renewed. These upgrades are part of the Asset Regeneration Program, a $24.76 million investment by the Victorian Government to remove unsafe infrastructure and to repair or replace assets across the Parks Victoria estate.
