Works start on historic Dee Slip Bridge repair

Monday 24 November, 2025

The historic Dee Slip Bridge in the Yarra Ranges National Park is one step closer to reopening, as work begins to restore pedestrian, cyclist and emergency vehicle access along the much-loved O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail on Wurundjeri Country. The repaired bridge is due to open in March 2026.

Repairs to the bridge will preserve its heritage while making it safer and more durable for future use. The restoration follows the bridge’s original design, retaining as much of the existing timber as possible to maintain its character and connection to local history.

As part of the works, a new timber deck and handrail are being installed, along with new horizontal steel beams to strengthen the structure and ensure it remains safe for visitors to cross.

Located on the lower slopes of Mount Donna Buang, the Dee Slip Bridge is a timber trestle bridge that spans a section of the O’Shannassy Aqueduct Trail. Originally built in 1947 after a section of the aqueduct collapsed and eroded the embankment.

The 30-kilometre walking trail cuts into the side of the mountain range and follows an open water race. The mixed-use trail is popular with walkers and cyclists.

In 2021, the bridge sustained significant damage when a large pine tree fell onto it. For community safety, access across the bridge was closed, and a temporary bypass track was created to allow visitors to continue using the trail while repair works were planned.

The repair of the Dee Slip Bridge is part of the Asset Regeneration Program, a $24.76 million investment by the Victorian Government to remove unsafe infrastructure and repair or replace assets across Victorian parks.
