Portsea Pier to undergo major maintenance works in July
Monday 25 May, 2026
Major maintenance works will begin in July 2026 to restore and strengthen Portsea Pier. This work follows significant storm damage in 2024.
Emergency repairs carried out after the storm made the pier safe in the short term, but more substantial work is now needed to ensure the pier can be enjoyed by the community for many years to come.
Our piers and jetties operate in a harsh marine environment. This work will improve the pier’s safety and help it better withstand future weather events.
For safety, Portsea Pier will be closed while works are underway, and a marine exclusion zone will be in place around the structure. This may result in temporary changes to pedestrian and vehicle access near the pier entrance. This is to keep people safe during the works. Parks Victoria will work closely with mooring holders and licensed tour operators ahead of the closure to find alternative nearby berthing options so they can continue operating.
As the works progress, there may be opportunities to reopen sections of the pier for licensed tour operators. This will be subject to safety approvals.
The works are expected to be completed before summer 2026, weather permitting.
Sorrento and Rye piers offer great opportunities for fishing, walking and taking in the bay views. For those interested in diving or snorkelling, Rye Pier is a popular spot, known for its clear waters, rich marine life and some of the warmest conditions in Port Phillip Bay.
