Byers Back Track (Lerderderg State Park, Lerderderg River Heritage River)

If your starting point is inside the park, the Byers Back Track (Blackwood to O’Briens Crossing Walk) commences at the O’Briens Crossing Day Visitor Area and follows an old water race above the Lerderderg River. Alternatively, an entrance into the park from Golden Point Rd in Blackwood will start you off on the trail. You will see many historical features along the way and keep an eye out for wildlife including birds, wallabies, and kangaroos.

This 11km, Grade 3 walk is great for nature admirers, as there are more than 320 native plant species recorded in the park including a spectacular display of wildflowers in Spring. For visitors that are interested in gold mining history, there are several historical features along the way.

You should allow approx. 4 hrs to complete the walk. There are some steep sections with difficult terrain.
Ensure you bring a map and carry plenty of water.
Dogs are allowed but must be on lead.
Prospecting, fossicking and digging is prohibited. Penalties apply.
