The 'wildest' and most remote section of the walk passing through the rolling hills of Johanna, descending to Milanesia Beach. Share the domain of the Eastern Grey Kangaroo amid the grassy valleys and changing landscape of remote farmland, isolated beaches and the stunning sea cliffs towards Ryans Den.

Canyon Walking Track Closure

Due to a damaged pedestrian bridge, Canyon walking track will be temporarily closed until maintenance works can be undertaken. 

Big Hill Campground seasonal closure

Big Hill Campground in Great Otway National Park will be closed over the winter season, from 1 July 2024 to 1 October 2024.

Sharps Campground permanently closed

Permanently closed due to environmental and safety risks. 

Maits Rest Closed

Due to heavy timber tree fall and associated ongoing tree risk, Maits Rest is closed for all access until further notice. 

Crews will be cleaning up when safe to do so.  It is unsafe to be in this area of the National Park. DO NOT ENTER CLOSED AREAS.

Aire East Campground - Closed

Due to ongoing wet conditions Aire East Campground is closed until late October 2024.

Aire West Campground - Closed

Due to estuary flooding the Aire West Campground is under water and is closed.

The campground is not accessible via Sand Road or Hordenvale Road due to flooding.

Great Ocean Walk - Closed - @ Aire River

  • Tree risk assessment has been completed west of Johanna Beach to the Twelve Apostles, and the Walk is open.
  • Trees may still be down in these areas.  Report trees down to 131963 when safe to do so.
  • The Great Ocean Walk is impassable at the Aire River and is CLOSED for safety.
  • Days 4 and 5 remain closed due to this flooding.  
  • Do not proceed west from Cape Otway > or East from Johanna Beach. 
  • It is unsafe to attempt to cross the flooded estuary waters.
  • The Great Ocean Walk camp at Aire River, and both Aire West and East campgrounds are CLOSED .

Melba Gully - Large bus access

Melba Gully Walk Track and picnic area is accessible for large coaches. Toilet facilities are available on site

Maits Rest Carpark- bus access

Maits Rest Carpark is suitable for small coaster buses only. Large buses or coaches are advised to use Melba Gully walk track near Lavers Hill.
