O'Briens Crossing to The Tunnel Walk - via Byers BackTrack (Lerderderg River Heritage River, Lerderderg State Park)
This Grade 4 walk follows an old water race around the steep Lerderderg valley above the river. A good map is essential in this area due to steep ridges, narrow tracks and twisting, winding pathways. Allow approx. 2 hrs for this walk.
Start at O'Briens Crossing carpark and walk up the steps following the signs to Byers Back Track. You will pass the gazebo and later pass over Ambler Lane, a 4wd track.
After crossing Ambler Lane Track, travel 1km and look for the sign directing you to the right towards The Tunnel from Gibble Track.
Check out the old water race and tunnel which was used to divert the river for gold mining. Once the river is reached at the bottom of the hill, crossing of the river may be required to get a good view of the tunnel cut in the rock.
Return the way you came crossing over Ambler Lane Track and eventually reaching back to O'Briens Crossing.
Visit in Spring and Summer to see the surrounding landscape vivid with wildflowers.
Bring your dog on a lead and watch out for snakes along the track and surrounds.
Prospecting, fossicking, and digging is prohibited. Penalties apply.
