Quartz Hill (Amherst Reef Geological Reserve, BUNG BONG - LILLICUR STATE FOREST)

Stop and marvel at one of Victoria’s only remaining quartz monoliths. Located between the township of Talbot and the city of Maryborough, the quartz monolith remains a testament to the ancient geological features which were once more commonly found throughout the goldfields. All most all quartz blow-outs were completely mined away during the goldrush period of the 1850s, as the thick golden veins were deeply coveted by European miners. The reserve features the largest outcrop of pure quartz rock remaining in Victoria. The reef forms a north-south ridge approximately 800 meters long. Huge masses of quartz stand over six metres high and in one spot a massive forty tonne boulder balances perilously atop the reef. There are large quartz boulders and smaller pieces of quartz formations scattered throughout the surrounding bushland. The site has no amenities, but is a pleasant spot for bushwalking, exercise and photography. The surrounding area was however been heavily mined and then abandoned for more profitable claims. To protect the geological significance of the reserve gold mining and prospecting is prohibited.
Gravel and dirt roads connect to the site and washouts can be common in this area, a 4wd or raised vehicle is advised.
