Site set-up has begun ahead of major works on the new $53 million St Kilda Pier following extensive planning and community consultation. 

A construction compound area has been established near the start of the pier and in Catani Gardens, which allows surrounding businesses and the Sea Baths carpark to remain open.

The Bay Trail will also remain open to enable cyclists, walkers, and runners to continue enjoying the area. 

Parks Victoria will seek to minimise impacts and inconveniences where possible and appreciate your patience as we deliver this critical and exciting project.

The existing pier will remain open as often as possible during construction; however, this project is significant, and people should prepare for an extended period of disruption.

The first stage of onsite work will take place offshore on the southern breakwater forecourt and penguin viewing area, including piling works.

Work hours will be Monday to Friday, 7:00am to 6:00pm. To minimise disturbance to weekend trading and events, work on Saturdays between 7:00am and 1:00pm will be used as a contingency only.

Public viewing of St Kilda’s famous colony of Little Penguins will remain closed during construction. Parks Victoria and Earthcare St Kilda will provide regular monitoring and care for the colony throughout construction. 

Pier Road will be closed to through traffic due to the location of the construction compound, and the Sea Baths carpark will continue to be accessible via Jacka Boulevard. In addition, the Royal Melbourne Yacht Squadron will be accessible from Pier Road to the north via Beaconsfield Parade.

The new pier will feature a spectacular curved design with a wider and more accessible walkway, tiered seating, additional toilets, and a new community space near the kiosk. The redevelopment will provide better views over the city and better protect the penguin colony, with a new viewing platform forming part of the design.

The highly anticipated project will also include a low landing constructed near the foreshore, providing easier access for passengers to ferry and tour operator vessels, an iconic entrance, and a connection between Catani Gardens and the vibrant St Kilda neighbourhood.

The existing pier will remain open during construction as much as possible until the completion of the project in 2024.
