New sports facilities on the way for Olinda

Friday 15 July, 2022

Community sporting clubs will soon enjoy new netball courts and cricket facilities at Olinda Recreation Reserve with a tender now open for construction.

The works make up the final part of a $7.67 million investment to transform the former Olinda Golf Course into 34 hectares of parklands, through the Olinda Precinct Plan developed in consultation with the community in 2017.

The project will add a new netball court, refurbish the existing court and install new cricket nets next to the oval, providing more opportunities for the community and sports lovers.

The Olinda Precinct Plan is being delivered in stages, with a new sporting oval and Olinda Green recreation area completed in 2020, and a nature-based playscape with picnic facilities and toilets completed in 2019.

The plan is delivering a range of new and improved facilities, experiences and recreational opportunities for both locals and visitors, while retaining the environmental values of the area.

Beyond the current works, planning is underway for the next phase of development at the Olinda Precinct, which involves improving the carpark, pathways and drainage systems, and replacing the former golf clubhouse with space for a new food and beverage offering and accessible toilets. This will be delivered thanks to a further $3.4 million investment.

Olinda Recreation Reserve is set in the Dandenong Ranges, between the Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, Olinda Precinct and R.J. Hamer Arboretum. Collectively, the area offers a fantastic location for a day of family picnicking fun, a meander through the stunning gardens to learn about its range of rhododendrons, camelias and daffodils, and now as a hub for community sport and active recreation.

Subject to on-ground conditions, works are expected to commence on the new sporting facilities in Spring 2022, with more information at: parks.vic.gov.au/projects.
