Tuesday 27 June, 2023

Get ready, Main Yarra Trail users. Construction has begun on a new elevated path to replace the steep steps at Gipps Street on this iconic urban trail on Wurundjeri Country.

The new elevated path will make it easier for families with prams, cyclists and people of all abilities to make a smooth, continuous journey along one of Melbourne’s iconic trails.

A section of the Main Yarra Trail is now closed as Parks Victoria begins construction of a new 200-metre elevated path above the riverbank. The section of trail to be closed is between Gipps Street and Clark Street in Abbotsford. Throughout the works, there will be a clearly signposted detour in place to help trail users navigate safely and easily around the construction zone.

Parks Victoria is excited to bring this project to life. Throughout the planning stages, Parks Victoria has consulted local community and user groups, including the Bicycle Network, Yarra City Council, and local residents, to ensure minimal disruption for the community and maximum benefit for trail users. The trail is expected to re-open in mid-2024.

Parks Victoria is also regenerating the riverbank as part of this project, cleaning up historical contamination, weeding out invasive species and planting native vegetation to rejuvenate this special part of the urban landscape.

The Main Yarra Trail follows the Birrarung/Yarra River upstream from the city to the Mullum Mullum Creek Trail. It also connects with the Capital City Trail and the Merri Creek Trail. The new elevated path at Gipps Street will allow for a seamless journey for walkers, rollers and riders (and their four-legged friends) as they explore the very best of nature around the city.

Quotes attributed to Sarah Eggleton, District Manager Waterways, Parks Victoria:

“Users of the Main Yarra Trail have been keen to see improved accessibility and connectivity, so we’re excited to be closer to delivering a dramatically improved and far more accessible experience for all.”

“The addition of an elevated walkway at Gipps Street will provide opportunities for more people to get active in nature and soak up the ambience of the Yarra River along the trail.”

“The construction of the Gipps Street elevated path also presents a unique opportunity to regenerate the Birrarung riverbank around the path site by clearing noxious weeds and planting native vegetation."
