Charting the course for the future in Sorrento

Thursday 5 September, 2024

Parks Victoria is reinforcing the future of another important Port Phillip Bay port area with the release of the Sorrento Local Port Area Plan.

This is the fourth Local Port Area Plan delivered by Parks Victoria since late 2022 and furthers our commitment to planning and future-proofing Victoria’s local ports.

Southern and Maritime Regional Director, Jodi Heath, announced the plan which sets out a strategic framework designed to meet community needs, enhance existing uses and create safer recreational opportunities.

The strategic plan emphasises the significant value of preserving the character of Sorrento Pier, including the reactivation of the Sorrento Pier Shed.

The plan also focuses on the navigational safety for the ferry service, including access to the boat ramp and changes to the swing moorings.

The plan includes the extension of the western pier head to accommodate additional berthing on the main pier, addressing future demand and supporting local tourism and recreational activities.

This project is part of the Victorian Government’s Sustainable Local Ports Framework and Parks Victoria's Local Ports’ Forward Planning Program, that guides where future investment is needed most. The successful implementation of the actions outlined in the plan will depend on future funding, planning and necessary approvals. To learn more, visit https://www.parks.vic.gov.au/projects

Quotes, attributed to the Southern and Maritime Regional Director, Jodi Heath

“Sorrento’s seaside environment with the pier, beach and its on-water activities are widely valued by the Victorian community.

The pier is an important economic and social contributor to Sorrento, supporting leisure and tourism activities and is situated next to the ferry passenger terminal.

This plan is a key step that will help guide future upgrades and maintenance to critical port infrastructure for the community in a fair and strategic way.
