Choose your adventure at these camping spots

Summer is the perfect time to get out and camp under the stars. Before you pitch your tent, spend the day exploring the nature around you. There’s lots of ways to enjoy our parks — whether you’re looking for a challenge, to learn something new or to just relax with family and friends. To help you plan your summer getaway, we’ve selected some of the best camping spots for a variety of different activities.

For 4WDers 

Snowdrift Camping Area, Wyperfeld National Park 
After a day-long 4WD adventure through the park this remote camping area at the base of a large sand dune is the perfect spot to set up for the night. Take in the sunset view from the top of the dune or enjoy the thrill of sliding right down the side. 


For wildlife lovers 

Lake Eildon National Park

Wake up to the sound of birds and take a wander along the nature trail beside the lake to learn more about the animals that call this park home. With toilets, showers and laundry facilities, it won’t be hard to freshen up after a day walking to stunning views, or swimming and watersports on the lake.

For the comforts of home

Buchan Caves Campground

The shady campground nestled in the valley at Buchan Caves offers powered sites, toilets and showers for those who like the home comforts. See kangaroos hop by, paddle in the Buchan River, learn about and explore the geological wonders of the area, and seek shade under the large European trees.

For canoers and kayakers 

Lower Glenelg National Park

If canoeing is your thing, then the riverside campsites along the majestic Glenelg River are perfect for that multi-day canoe adventure. Carry your gear on board then pull and up and set up camp on the riverbank. Perhaps even throw in a fishing line and catch dinner.

For history buffs

Butts Reserve at Maldon Historic Area

Base yourself at Butts Reserve at the foot of Mount Tarrengower on the outskirts of Maldon. One of the country’s most well-preserved historic villages, you can step back in time and wander the local streets before taking in the stunning view from the lookout tower at the top.



For mountain bikers 

Leanganook, Mount Alexander Regional Park

Grab your cycling and camping gear and pitch a tent at Leanganook camping area. With the 210km Goldfields Track running right through the park this is the perfect base to explore on your mountain bike, or head to the nearby downhill mountain bike track La La Bar Gwa at Harcourt.  


For staying close to Melbourne

Campsites surrounded by lush green towering trees and walks to waterfalls and great views throughout the national park make this escape close to Melbourne feel a million miles from anywhere. 

Not too far from Melbourne, but with a feeling of being much further away, a camping trip in the Lerderderg will feel like a wilderness adventure. Picnic tables, toilets and fireplaces are available at the campground.

For spectacular views

Mt Buffalo National Park

Enjoy campsites nested amongst the snowgums and take in views over Lake Catani on a short morning stroll from your tent. With walks galore nearby you can enjoy spectacular views across the Victorian Alps, waterfalls, an historic chalet and alpine plateaus and several local nearby tourist towns. 


For being by the water 

Merbein Common, Murray River Reserve

Enjoy a social time with friends and family camped beside a popular beach and sandbar along the Murray River, just minutes out of Mildura. Enjoy sunsets over the river and take a dip to cool off on those warm days.
