New pavilion coming to Albert Park for community sport

Wednesday 3 November, 2021

One of Melbourne's favourite sporting and recreational parks is on track to host even more sports players and fans, with plans underway to build a new shared-use sporting pavilion for the community at Oval One in 2022.

We've appointed Lloyd Group to undertake the construction of the new pavilion at Albert Park, which has been designed to meet the growing demand and diverse needs of the local community, including boosting opportunities for women’s participation in sport.

The pavilion will meet AFL Regional Facility Preferred Guidelines Victoria requirements and universal design standards to ensure people of all abilities can enjoy playing and watching the sports they love.

Facilities will include four changerooms, an umpires’ room, community space, a covered deck, all abilities access, and connecting paths and landscaping to link the new pavilion with other facilities within the park.

The functional design of the pavilion was developed in collaboration with a Sports Users Advisory Group that was initiated to make sure the future needs of the sporting groups will be met.

The Albert Park Pavilion will be constructed from pre-fabricated materials developed offsite to minimise disruption to local residents and park users with a shorter on-site build time.

On site construction and installation of the pavilion is set to commence in early 2022, subject to on-ground conditions.

As a 'year-round' facility, the pavilion at Oval One will encourage players and spectators to enjoy their favourite sports come rain, hail or shine. We expect the pavilion to be completed in mid-2022.

This project is being funded as part of the Victorian Government’s $21.35 million ‘Opportunities in Victorian Parks’ initiative that’s investing in sport and recreation infrastructure across five sites in metropolitan Melbourne including Yarra Bend Park (Fairfield); Olinda Recreation Reserve (Olinda); Jells Park (Wheelers Hill); Albert Park Reserve (Albert Park/St Kilda) and Ryan’s Reserve (Richmond).
