The unique opportunity to camp at Point Nepean National Park is a step closer following the appointment of CCB Envico to create the low-impact campground.

The Victorian Government has invested $4.5 million into the project, which will offer people a new way to experience and appreciate Point Nepean’s remarkable natural beauty and cultural heritage. 

Point Nepean National Park is a significant place for Traditional Owners of the lands, the Bunurong people, and protects a range of native plants and animals. With a rich military, defence, immigration and quarantine history, heritage-listed buildings and a stunning natural landscape, the park is popular with locals and visitors.

To be located near the foreshore within the historic Quarantine Station precinct, the campground will be comprised of a series of tent platforms for short-stay visits. To further maintain a low-impact presence in the park, there will be facilities provided in repurposed Quarantine Station buildings.

These and other park improvements are being delivered by Parks Victoria as part of the Point Nepean Master Plan, which aims to protect and celebrate the park’s special natural and cultural values.

With annual visitation to the national park increasing, the master plan includes repairs, upgrades and improvements to help visitors experience and understand more about Point Nepean while investing in sustainable facilities.

To date, the masterplan has delivered a major upgrade to Defence Road, which improved visitor safety and bicycle access, and new visitor facilities at the Quarantine Station precinct including seating, picnic and BBQ facilities, shelters and drinking water fountains.

Planning is also underway on a project to immerse visitors in the stories of this special place. A strategy has been developed on how to highlight Point Nepean’s living Aboriginal culture, and tell the park's overlapping natural, military and quarantine histories. 

Subject to on-ground conditions and any public health directions that may be in place, onsite preparations are expected to begin later this month, with works starting in early 2022 after the peak of the summer holiday visitor period.
