A new low-impact, campground at Point Nepean National Park is beginning to take shape, with works starting on this month on the $4.5 million project that will offer visitors a new way to experience the site’s remarkable natural beauty and cultural heritage. 

To be located on the lawn outside the historic Quarantine Station, the campground will be designed for people new to camping, with pre-pitched tents on platforms and facilities including a camp kitchen and toilets to be provided in repurposed Quarantine Station buildings.

A second stage of the project, which will see additional tent pads and amenities to the south of the Quarantine Station, is expected to commence later this year, with Parks Victoria appointing landscape architect and urban design firm TCL for the design works.  

Point Nepean National Park is a significant place for Traditional Owners of the lands, the Bunurong people, and protects a range of native plants and animals. With a rich military, defence, immigration and quarantine history, heritage-listed buildings and a stunning natural landscape, camping at the park will offer a special opportunity for visitors.

The campground project forms part of the Point Nepean Master Plan, which was released in 2018 to protect and celebrate the park’s special natural and cultural values. With visitor numbers increasing, the plan includes repairs, upgrades and improvements to help visitors experience and understand more about Point Nepean.

Since being released, masterplan projects delivered include a major upgrade to Defence Road to improve safety and bicycle access, and new visitor facilities at the Quarantine Station precinct including seating, picnic and BBQ facilities, shelters and drinking water fountains.

Funding for the campground includes investment as part of the Victoria’s Great Outdoors program, which is investing $105.6 million over four years to make it easier for more Victorians to enjoy the great outdoors with cheaper camping fees, new camping grounds, 4WD tracks and walking trails.

Subject to on-ground conditions and any public health directions that may be in place, the first stage of the campground project is expected to be completed by mid-year.
