New sporting pavilion for Yarra Bend Park shaping up

Wednesday 13 April, 2022

Local sporting clubs in Melbourne’s inner-north are one step closer to having a new home, with installation progressing on a new shared-use pavilion on site at Fairlea Reserve in Yarra Bend Park on Wurundjeri Country.

The new facilities will make way for more opportunities for women’s and junior level sport at the precinct, while offering diversity of sport options for the community to enjoy.

Works commenced in October 2021 on a project to develop eight new netball courts and the shared-use pavilion, thanks to an $8 million investment through the Victorian Government’s Inner City Netball Program.

This project will see an under-utilised section of Fairlea Reserve activated with new netball courts with competition lighting, a new pavilion for the local netball, fly fishers, football and cricket teams, and other improvements including bike racks, landscaping and pathways.

With the pavilion now shaping up on site, you can almost hear the cheers of match-winning netballers, footballers and cricketers inside!

The modular-style pavilion was manufactured off-site in Portarlington, before being craned into place in sections last month.

By opting for a pre-fabricated, modular-style construction, the majority of the pavilion could be built off-site, resulting in less disruption to the park and visitors, and a smaller overall footprint.

These new facilities at Yarra Bend Park are expected to be completed during Winter 2022, subject to on-ground conditions.
