Community helping shape new trails at Jells Park

Friday 1 July, 2022

Following community feedback, Parks Victoria is seeking tenders to plan and design the Jells Park shared-use trail, a five-kilometre loop for walking, running and cycling at the popular park in Wheelers Hill on Wurundjeri Country.

The community consultation, which saw more than 460 people provide feedback, has resulted in a second trail now being proposed. This 2.5km loop trail would appeal to a wide variety of visitors and be focused around the café and playscapes with views across the lake.

Feedback from the community has included ideas about track surfaces, lighting, safety and facilities such as drinking fountains, seating, signage and rubbish bins. People also commented on safely balancing the needs of different trail users, such as walkers and cyclists, the need to connect the trail with existing facilities such as toilets and shelters, and that areas of natural bushland be treated carefully in any developments.

Understanding what people want to see and experience on the park’s trails will shape the initial designs. Once ready, we’ll share these with the community to make sure they meet the community’s needs and expectations.

Expected to be finished by late 2023, the project will involve resurfacing and widening existing trails, adding new paths, signage, lighting, seating and drinking fountains.

The works follow the creation of two new playscapes in 2021 that are providing adventures for kids of all ages and abilities. A Changing Places toilet block next to the visitor centre and café was also installed for visitors with high-support needs and their carers.
