Grampians' iconic Grand Canyon Loop Walk reopens
Thursday 22 August, 2024
Visitors can get back to exploring the natural beauty and spectacular views of Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, now that upgrades to the trail are now complete and reopen to the public.
Located in south-western Victoria, the Grampians are part of the Gariwerd Aboriginal cultural landscape, and home to spectacular waterfalls, dazzling spring wildflowers, mountain panoramas and native wildlife such as kangaroos, emus, native birds and curious Wallabies.
A new staircase has now been installed at the park's Grand Canyon, providing a safe link for visitors to walk between the top and bottom of the canyon and experience the spectacular rock formations of Gariwerd. It had been closed for safety reasons since 2021, after an engineering assessment found the staircase needed replacing.
In partnership with Envirotechniques, Valley Engineering, and Paton Air, the new 3.4 tonne marvel was transported 280 kilometers from Melbourne and carefully airlifted into the canyon by helicopter.
The project is part of the Victorian Government’s $24.76 million Asset Regeneration Program – which is helping to remove, replace or repair unsafe infrastructure at parks across the state.
The Grand Canyon upgrade is just one way we're helping to keep Gariwerd special. The Grampians Peaks Trail Trailheads project will revitalise access points spread along the trail – including improved carparking, landscaping and visitor and interpretive information about the cultural and environmental values of the area.
The spectacular MacKenzie Falls precinct is also being restored, with a project underway to make a range of improvements to the area.
