Fairy Cave repair works start
Wednesday 5 February, 2025
After being significantly damaged in the 2019-2020 Black Summer bushfires, works to repair the entrance to the Fairy Cave at Buchan Caves Reserve have started.
A number of assessments and statutory approvals have been required to make sure that Buchan’s environmental and cultural values are protected during works, including a Heritage Victoria permit, a cultural heritage management plan, an environmental permit, building permit and geotechnical investigations.
While Fairy Cave has been open for tours since the fires, these repairs will see the timber log entrance structure and roof rebuilt and returned back to its former glory.
Works are expected to take a couple of months, depending on the weather.
During this time, the Fairy Cave entrance will be unavailable for tours. Tours will continue to be offered in the Royal Cave, and during peak periods we will also run shorter tours in the Blackwood Chamber (via the exit of Fairy Cave).
To ensure the safety of our visitors, staff and contractors, areas surrounding the Fairy Cave entrance will also be temporarily closed while the works are in progress. These will include the F.J. Wilson Walking Track and Caves Road from Bridge 7.
