Contractor appointed to rebuild the Sealers Cove Boardwalk
Tuesday 7 October, 2025
Sealers Cove Boardwalk is one step closer to reopening after the contract to rebuild the boardwalk was awarded. Following a competitive tender process, Envirotechniques has been appointed to carry out the works.
Envirotechniques are a Victorian environmental construction company, with expertise in ecology, horticulture and ecosystem care. For over 30 years they have built trails, constructed boardwalks and installed bridges throughout Victoria, including many in the Grampians (Gariwerd) and Wilsons Promontory National Parks.
Construction is expected to begin in November 2025 and will take place over the summer. The track is expected to be completed and open in autumn 2026. Carrying out the work depends on the weather and sea conditions.
The existing wooden boardwalk is being replaced with a Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic. This creates a sturdy walking surface that is easier for the team to maintain. This material has been successfully used at both Lily Pilly Gully and to Waterloo Bay. The boardwalk will be wider and higher above the ground and water. It is better suited to the aquatic and marine environment.
Local rangers inspect the boardwalk in the aftermath of major storm damage.
The remote nature of the site makes for a complex project. At times during construction, the construction team will camp at Sealers Cove. They will rely on boats for transport to and from the site. They will use helicopters to fly in construction materials and to remove the damaged boardwalk.
Sealers Cove is a highlight at the Wilsons Promontory National Park. With its stunning beach, the cove is popular with hikers.
In 2021, successive storms and floods hit the Prom. This caused significant and widespread damage to the Sealers Cove Boardwalk. The boardwalk is the only way across an otherwise impassable swamp. The wooden boardwalk was over 40 years old. Sections were repaired after the flooding in 2011. But the damage caused during 2021 is beyond repair.
