Yarrawonga Regional Park

Explore the iconic River Red Gum forests along the Murray River in the Yarrawonga Regional Park. Whether you’re after a relaxing time or some fun recreation, this park has it all. Walking, camping, bike riding, fishing, kayaking, and many other water sports are all common activities along this stretch of the Murray River.

The shoreline of the Yarrawonga Common is poplular for water activities. Access the water via the boat ramp or pull up and have a picnic on one of the tables provided amongst the river red gums back from the shore – and then treat yourself to a walk through River Red Gum Forest.

Camp along high bank of the Yarrawonga Common or on one of the pristine beaches located downstream within the Yarrawonga Regional Park.

The Yarrawonga Regional Park is home to iconic Australian species such as the Koala, Eastern Grey Kangaroo, and the Cockatoo. Bird lovers may spot an array of species, including the listed threatened Eastern Great Egret and Swift Parrot.

 

Things To Do

Enjoy some down time camping on one of the many natural beaches along the bends of the Murray River, walk along the Yarrawonga Common Walking Track which meanders through the Red Gum forest or try a range of water recreation activities popular on the Murray River.

Camping

Camping spots are situated throughout the Yarrawonga Regional Park on the beaches, along the high banks, and in the Red Gum forest and the tracks into the park allow for vehicles of all sizes. Popular camping spots include Yarrawonga Common, Forges Bend and Forges No.2, Brownings Bend and Little Bruces camping areas.

Water activities

The stretch of the Murray River located along the park is used for a range of water recreation activities including kayaking, boating, paddle crafts, jet skis, wakeboarding and water skiing. In peak visitor times traffic increases significantly making the waterway busy. The area is used frequently by keen fisherman looking to catch the illustrious metre long Murray Cod. Take your chances catching other native fish in the area including Golden Perch, Silver Perch and Trout Cod. All fisherman are required to follow rules and regulations. All Murray Cod between 55 and 75 cm must be released. Fishing is not allowed from the 1 September to 30 November.

Yarrawonga Common Walking Track

Walk with your family, friends, and even your dog through some of the iconic River Red Gum forest on the Yarrawonga Common Walking Track. The start of the walking track is located off the carpark at the entrance of the Yarrawonga Common via Cullens Road. The track meanders through the Red Gum Forest of the Yarrawonga Common Camping Area, and connects the area to the town centre via the Yarrawonga Holiday Park.

How to get there

Yarrawonga Regional Park

The main access road in to the Yarrawonga Common Camping Area is by Cullens Road, off the Murray Valley highway to the west of the Yarrawonga town centre. The rest of the entrances into the camping areas downstream are along the Murray Valley Highway. Detailed maps of the roads into the area can be purchased from the Yarrawonga Mulwala Information Centre.

When to go

For those wishing to use the river for water activitiesssummer is the best season to visit. For fishing Summer and Autumn are the most popular times. The section of the Murray River between Yarrawonga Weir and Newell Highway Bridge in Tocumwal (this encompasses all the river along Yarrawonga Regional Park) is closed for fishing between 1 September and 30 November.

Safety in nature

There are minimal facilities and the park gives visitors a true bush experience. The park has boat ramps, picnic tables and modern pit toilets.

Avoid picnicking, camping and resting under or close to trees, as they may drop heavy branches at any time without warning.

Parks Victoria provides a range of a equipment, including all-terrain and beach wheelchairs, facilities, accommodation and accessibility information and programs to help you plan and enjoy your visit to Victoria's parks.

Assistance dogs are welcome in Parks Victoria parks and reserves. Entry requirements apply for parks and reserves that are usually dog prohibited, such as national parks.

  • Notices Affecting Multiple Sites

    Temporary closure to vehicle access due to inundation - Yarrawonga Regional Park & River Murray Reserve between Yarrawonga and Cobram

    Due to moderate flooding upstream of Yarrawonga, weir releases into the Murray River downstream are expected to gradually increase in the coming days. This will result in inundation of gullies and low lying areas along visitor sites on the Murray River between Yarrawonga and Cobram over the next week. The following areas between Yarrawonga and Cobram are temporarily closed to vehicle access: 
     
    • Yarrawonga Regional Park – Yarrawonga Common, Forges Bend, Browning Bend, Little Bruces
    • River Murray Reserve – Bruces Beach 1 & 2
     
    Take care and monitor the situation
    • Being the school holidays, we encourage community members to take extra care around rivers, creeks and lakes as water levels may rise quickly and without warning. We encourage those travelling to new or unfamiliar areas to exercise additional caution.
    • If camping these school holidays, never camp under trees or branches and avoid camping on low-lying land near creeks, rivers, streams and other waterways.
    • Floodwater is dangerous – never drive, walk or ride through floodwater.
    • Stay up-to-date with any warnings issued by downloading the VicEmergency app and establishing a personal watch zone for your local area or the area you are travelling to. Updated forecasts are also available on the Bureau of Meteorology website at bom.gov.au.
    • Local flood guides are also available at ses.vic.gov.au to aid preparation.
     

How we keep it special

The current management plan is the River Red Gum Management Plan July 2018. The River Red Gum Parks Management Plan outlines the management of more than 100 parks and reserves covering more than 215000 ha along the Murray, Goulburn and Ovens river corridors between Wodonga and the South Australian border.
