Halfway Hut Camping Area

The Southern Prom Circuit weaves from the slopes of Mount Oberon to the park’s eastern shores and the southern-most point of Australia’s mainland. It passes through diverse plant communities and spectacular coastlines. Hikers can spend anywhere between two and seven days exploring this part of the park.

Surrounded by lush vegetation, Halfway Hut Camping Area is a bush campsite situated inland on the Prom and is accessible only by hiking via the Telegraph Track. Halfway Hut is a great place to stop or for an overnight stay.

Basic facilities are provided including composting toilets and water. Water is sourced from the tank located in the campground, please boil or otherwise treat the water.

When you're there

Overnight hikers must obtain a permit before commencing their walk and carry it with them at all times. Please ensure that you have an emergency contact who has been notified of your trip itinerary. Each area has a maximum of two consecutive nights and a maximum group size of 12.

Visiting a park can be more of a challenge for people with disabilities, however, in Victoria there are a wide range of facilities to help people of all abilities enjoy our wonderful parks around the state. Parks Victoria provides a range of a equipment, including all-terrain and beach wheelchairs, facilities, accommodation and accessibility information and programs to help you plan and enjoy your visit to Victoria's parks.

Assistance dogs are welcome in Parks Victoria parks and reserves. Entry requirements apply for parks and reserves that are usually dog prohibited, such as national parks.

Be prepared and stay safe

Wilsons Promontory National Park is in the South and West Gippsland fire district. Bushfires can occur during the warmer months. It is your responsibility to check current and forecast weather conditions.

Check the Fire Danger Rating and for days of Total Fire Ban at emergency.vic.gov.au, on the Vic Emergency App or call the Vic Emergency Hotline 1800 226 226.

How we keep it special

  • All plants, animals, other natural features and cultural sites are protected and must not be disturbed or removed.
  • Stay on walking tracks to avoid getting lost or spreading Cinnamon Fungus. This waterborn disease kills native flora and can be carried to new areas on the soles of your shoes.
  • Fishing and the taking of shellfish or crustaceans is not permitted from the shore or waters within Wilsons Promontory Marine National Park. Bait collection is not allowed anywhere in the park.
  • Feeding wildlife is bad for their health. It is an offence to feed or leave food where it is accessible to wildlife. Penalties apply.

  • Notices Affecting Multiple Sites

    Deer Control Program 7 - 11 October 2024, Wilsons Promontory

    Parks Victoria will be conducting a deer control program at Wilsons Promontory National Park 7th - 11th October 2024. 
     
    From 5pm to 8am each day there will be no access to the following visitor areas while the operation occurs:
    • Stockyard Campground
    • Big Drift
    • Yanakie Cemetery
    • Shallow Inlet Walk via Hourigan Camp Lane
    • Cotters Lake and Cotters Beach
    • Oberon Bay Campground & Beach (5pm Monday 7th  – 8am Tuesday 8th October ONLY)
    Other visitor areas and some management vehicle only tracks may also be intermittently closed overnight while the operation occurs. 
    Signage will be in place to inform visitors of all relevant closures. 

    Tidal River Footbridge Closed

    Tidal River Footbridge is closed due to safety concerns following an engineering assessment.

    Pillar Point and Tidal Overlook Walking Tracks can be accessed from Lilly Pilly Gully Carpark and Squeaky Beach.

  • Wilsons Promontory National Park

    Sealers Cove boardwalk is closed

    The Sealers Cove boardwalk needs to be rebuilt, following major storm and flood damage. 

    This will be a major and complex project. It will replace two kilometres of boardwalk over sensitive terrain while sensitively managing the surrounding environment.

    There is currently no public access to the boardwalk, and access to Sealers Cove is only possible via a 25km hike from Telegraph Saddle.

    Wilsons Promontory National Park - Invasive Species Control Programs

    Introduced species such as deer, rabbits, foxes and feral cats are all major threats to nature. Wilsons Promontory National Park is working towards pest free nature.

    Targeted invasive species control programs will be in place within Wilsons Promontory National Park between June 2023 - June 2025.
