Balt Camp (Wombat-Lerderderg National Park, WOMBAT STATE FOREST)
Established in 1946, Balt Camp was built by the Forestry Commission to house Northern European migrants displaced by World War II. Today, visitors can explore the remains of the former camp, including stone chimneys, building foundations and walls from structures such as the cookhouse, manager's hut and toilet block. The site also lies along the Lerderderg Track, making it a point of interest for walkers exploring the area.
Free camping is permitted, with several clearings available for tent camping behind the historic ruins. Dogs on lead are permitted, including when camping. A fire pit is provided, however there are no other visitor facilities. Campers must be self-sufficient and bring all the water, food and equipment they need for their stay. There are no toilets, drinking water or rubbish bins. Please take all rubbish home. Campfires are permitted in the firepit provided, if it is not a Total Fire Ban day and all relevant fire restrictions are observed.
Balt Camp is in the Central Fire District. Bushfire safety is a personal responsibility. For up to date information on bushfires in Victoria call the VicEmergency Hotline on 1800 226 226, download the VicEmergency app, visit www.emergency.vic.gov.au or tune into a local radio station.
