The short but challenging Canyon Walk ascends from the Sugarloaf Saddle Day Visitor Area to the mesmerising panoramas of Sugarloaf Peak (920m). Climb to the highest peak on the Sugarloaf Range, through open eucalypt forest, up rugged rock faces to see the jagged ridge stretch out before you.

This challenging Grade 5 track climbs steeply to Sugarloaf Peak and is suitable for experienced bushwalkers only. The route involves scaling some very steep sections of rock face. Although not easy, it is less challenging than the Wells Cave approach. If you have scrambled up via Wells Cave, the Canyon Track is the recommended descent back to Sugarloaf Saddle, where you can relax and enjoy a picnic after your climb.

The Canyon Track is part of the longer Cathedral Range Southern Circuit and provides access to the Razorback Track leading to The Farmyard, where well-equipped hikers can camp overnight.

Visitor Tips: This trail includes some exposed ridge walking, where there is little shelter. It is only suitable for fit and experienced hikers in good weather. Check the weather conditions before setting out, and allow plenty of daylight to complete your walk. The weather on the range can change quickly, so ensure you are well-equipped, and wear appropriate clothing including sturdy hiking footwear. Carry sufficient water to stay hydrated (there are no natural water sources on the trail). Phone signals are unreliable – hikers should consider carrying a radio or personal locator beacon, and don’t forget to communicate your intentions to friends or relatives before setting out.
