The project
Located in East Gippsland, Snowy River National Park offers a variety of recreational opportunities for visitors, including sightseeing, walking, four-wheel driving, and camping.
The works include improvements to sections of the Deddick Trail (McKillops Bowen Track), Bowen Track, and other tracks within the 4WD route. These tracks were significantly damaged during the 2020 bushfires and later severe storms. The tracks will be updated to improve their surface, drainage, erosion issues and some sections of overgrown vegetation post-fire.

The upgrades will:
- Improve safety and access for four-wheel drive users exploring Snowy River National Park.
- Enhance visitor experience through better road conditions and reduce the risk of track closures.
- Support nature-based tourism and recreational opportunities in East Gippsland.
Environment
Improved tracks will:
- Protect vegetation by ensuring that vehicles stay on marked tracks.
- Minimise erosion and sediment runoff through targeted road surface improvements.
- Support responsible recreation by maintaining access without compromising ecosystem health.
- Help manage post-fire regrowth and minimise further track degradation.
- Protect surrounding vegetation and soil stability through upgraded drainage, supporting long-term ecosystem health.
Project funding
This project has been funded $998,000 from Victoria’s Great Outdoors. Victoria’s Great Outdoors is $106.6 million investment by the Victorian Government into better campgrounds, walking trails, 4WD tracks and visitor facilities across Victoria’s parks and state forests.
Environment and cultural heritage management
An Environmental Review and Assessment Plan has been developed to provide insights into the environmental values, potential impacts, and regulatory requirements relevant to the project. A thorough cultural heritage investigation has been completed to identify and protect cultural heritage as part of the Cultural Heritage Management Plan process
