Project status
Kanes Bridge has reopened.
Strengthening works and associated investigations have been completed, reopening this key connection for pedestrians and cyclists.

The Project
Kanes Bridge in Yarra Bend Park was temporarily closed in June 2026 after deterioration was identified in some of the bridge's structural beams during scheduled deck plank replacement works.
A detailed engineering inspection was undertaken and identified splitting in several beams, as well as termite infestation that required repair and treatment before the bridge could safely reopen.
Following the investigations, strengthening works were undertaken to reinforce the bridge structure. The works included the installation of two supplementary girder beams and reinforcement of the existing longitudinal beam using rope access techniques.
To help manage the bridge's load limits, temporary barriers have been put in place along its length. As the bridge has been narrowed, cyclists are required to dismount and give way to pedestrians while crossing the bridge.
The investigations and strengthening works have now been completed, and pedestrian and bicycle access across Kanes Bridge has been restored.
This project takes place on Wurundjeri Land and the project working group acknowledges that greater engagement with the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation is key to promoting healthy country.
