Flinders Ocean Beach Car Park and Track Project

Project status

The project

This project is being delivered on Bunurong Country.

The King Street Beach Access is a walking track located at Flinders in the Mornington Peninsula National Park. The trail originates from the junction of King Street and Golf Links Road and provides pedestrian access to the western section of Flinders Ocean Beach.

In 2020, following a major rain event a significant landslide occurred below the visitor car park near the King Street Beach Access walking track – causing a large section of the car park to collapse and the steep slope continues to be unstable.

To keep the community safe, both the car park and entrance to the walking track have remained closed while Parks Victoria have undertaken assessments to understand future options for the site.

To ensure the safety of visitors, Parks Victoria has made the decision to decommission the car park and remediate the site by undertaking replanting and implementing better drainage.

We will also upgrade and realign the beach access track, and establish new entrance point outside the high-risk landslide zone – helping to reopen the walking track to the community and keep it safe for many years to come.

By upgrading the track and decommissioning the car park, the project will help to reopen access to the beach via the track and keep the community safe.

Environmental

Planned revegetation of the site will have positive benefits to the local environment, while also maintaining public access to the beach.

Project funding

This project has been funded as part of the Victorian State Government's Asset Regeneration Program - helping to keep assets across Victoria safe.

Environmental and cultural heritage management

Preliminary environmental and cultural heritage investigations have been completed.

Visitor safety is our number one priority when considering risk in parks.

While nature will always be unpredictable, our projects and maintenance works help minimise risks and help people explore the great outdoors safely.

Parks Victoria is responsible for continuously managing and maintaining over 50,000 pieces of infrastructure across the state annually.

We’re also delivering new projects to help visitors get into nature. These are thoroughly planned and prepared to keep people and projects separate – and safe.

When visiting a park where projects are happening, especially during construction, it’s important that people follow the direction of signs, stay out of fenced and restricted areas, and listen to Parks Victoria staff and work crews.

Access changes

The entrance to the beach track is currently closed. Barriers and signs are in place to keep the public safe and we ask that the community not access the carpark and track entrance while it’s closed.
