Point Nepean National Park Projects

Point Nepean National Park is one of Victoria’s most important natural, cultural, and historical places, and a popular destination for hundreds of thousands of visitors each year.

It is a significant place for Traditional Owners, the Bunurong people, whose history on these lands span back thousands of years. It is an important sanctuary for the protection of a range of native plants and animals, such as the White-footed Dunnart, the Burrunan dolphin and the Coastal Moonah woodland plant community. It has also played an important role in shaping early European settlement and the defence of Australia, being used to quarantine people arriving in Victoria, defending the colony and state, and for military training.

A number of projects are currently underway at Point Nepean, to protect the site’s values and enhance the ways that people can connect to this beautiful national park. Find out more about these below.

Projects

Campground project

A low-impact campground with pre-pitched tents has been built at the Quarantine Station, creating a unique opportunity for people to extend their visit to one of Victoria’s most beautiful and significant national parks. Stage 2 of this project is now underway.

Story-telling and interpretation project

This story-telling and interpretation project will immerse visitors in the stories of this special place, and help more Victorians better understand its cultural heritage and non-Aboriginal cultural heritage significance, and environmental value.

Fort Nepean conservation works

This project will help remedy structural issues, including conservation of concrete structures across Fort Nepean. This will enable the safe reopening of several key visitor areas, and will facilitate conservation of this important part of Victoria’s history for years to come.
