Upper Murray Bushfire Recovery

Parks Victoria is reconstructing and repairing campgrounds and visitor facilities following major bushfire damage in summer 2019/20. The recovery work is large in scale, particularly at Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park (which was 95% impacted) and Mount Mitta Mitta Regional Park (100% impacted) along with 10 of the 11 campgrounds on the Murray River Reserve incurring damage. A number of 4WD tracks were also damaged in the fires, including the iconic Mt Pinnibar area – these routes are being treated for hazardous trees and surface damage.

What is being delivered

  • Campground and visitor amenities in Burrowa Pine Mountain National Park
  • Replacement of fences and signage
  • Revegetation work

Anticipated reopening Mount Mittamatite (early 2021), Alpine National Park (Mt Pinnibar, Mt Gibbo, Wild Boar Range, Glen Dart etc) in early 2021 along with Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park (staged during 2021).

 

Recent completed works include

  • Removed hazardous trees
  • Removed and replaced damaged fences, gates and signage
  • Reopened Murray River Reserves
  • Reopened 10 of 11 campgrounds in the Upper Murray Reserve
  • Reopened the Tom Groggin Track
  • Replacement of assets on Mt Mitta Mitta (also known as Mt Mittamatite)

 

Project duration and key dates

Works commence – mid 2020

Works complete – end 2021 

 

Project funding

Project funding is still being determined and is dependent upon the type and serviceability of new assets. In some cases asset replacements will be like-for-like, subject to funding.

The Upper Murray region is a picturesque district offering both alpine mountainous terrain and absolute tranquillity along the Murray River. Camp at one of the many sites along the mighty river, go fishing four-wheel driving or take a hike in the picturesque mountains.
