Upper Murray Bushfire Recovery
Parks Victoria is treating hazards, re-opening tracks and reconstructing and repairing campgrounds and visitor facilities following major bushfire damage in summer 2019/20.
The recovery work is large in scale, particularly within Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park and the roads and tracks within the Alpine National Park, including the iconic Mt Pinnibar area.
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
- approx. 95% of the park impacted.
- loss of facilities (toilets, tables etc.) at all campgrounds (Bluff Creek, Blue Gum Camp, Hinces Creek).
- loss of walking track infrastructure (footbridges etc.) and subsequent track scouring from storms and rain events.
- loss of signage.
- significant numbers of burnt and hazardous trees.
- safety issues and rock fall on unstable slopes bare of vegetation.
Mount Mitta Mitta Regional Park
- approx.100% of the park impacted.
- loss of facilities and infrastructure at visitor sites and walking tracks.
- loss of signage.
- tracks scoured and eroded by subsequent storms and rain events.
Murray River Reserve
- 3 out of 9 campgrounds impacted.
- 1 out of 5 day visitor sites impacted.
Alpine National Park
- major impacts to roads and tracks, especially in the Alpine Ash areas with many burnt and hazardous trees.
- loss of signage and visitor infrastructure at Glen Dart.
- tracks through the nearby Mount Gibbo and Wild Boar Range Natural Feature and Scenic Reserves were also heavily impacted.
What is being delivered
Mount Mitta Mitta (Mittamatite) Regional Park
- safety works at visitor sites, in particular treatment of hazardous trees.
- replacement of signage
- track reforming, culvert re-establishment and drainage
- improve carpark at southern end of Mittamatite RP
Alpine National Park
- Surveyors Creek area – tree hazard works.
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
- assessment of infrastructure damage and safety issues continuing.
- planning for facility and signage replacement and upgrade.
Recent completed works include
Murray River Reserve
- damaged fences replaced.
- tree hazards removed.
- all affected campgrounds and day visitor sites reopened.
Alpine National Park
- Tom Groggin Track, the Murray River ford at Tom Groggin Station and Davies Plain Track reopened to 4WD vehicles.
- hazardous tree treatment works completed in the Mt Anderson and Indi River areas.
- Bunroy and Indi River area - tracks and campsites reopened.
- Mt Pinnibar and Mt Gibbo area opened after track clearing, treating hazardous trees and reforming damaged tracks to enable access.
Mount Mitta Mitta (Mittamatite) Regional Park
- Emberys Lookout picnic facilities replaced.
- hazardous trees treated along some tracks.
- some signage replaced.
Burrowa-Pine Mountain National Park
- hazardous trees treated along some tracks.
- some signage replaced.
Wild Boar Range Natural Features and Scenic Reserve reopened.
Expected project duration and key dates
- Mount Mitta Mitta (Mittamatite) Regional Park in early 2021;
- Alpine National Park (Mt Pinnibar, Surveyors Creek areas) in early 2021;
- Mount Gibbo Natural Features and Scenic Reserve in early 2021;
