  • Lake Bolac Highway Park

Blue Green Algae - Lake Bolac

Parks Victoria has announced that a blue-green algae bloom is currently affecting Lake Bolac, in western Victoria.

Warning signs will be installed at the lake and the public is warned not to swim in and to avoid any direct contact with the affected water.
Direct contact with blue-green algae can cause allergic reactions such as skin rashes or itchiness; sore eyes ears and nose or if swallowed gastroenteritis, nausea or vomiting.
People who come into contact with contaminated water should wash immediately in fresh water, and seek medical advice if experiencing illness.
Any fish harvested from blue-green algae affected water should have gills and guts removed prior to cooking. People should not eat whole fish, shellfish or crustaceans collected from Lake Bolac. The type of algae affecting Lake Bolac produces toxins that can concentrate in shellfish and crustaceans, and accumulate in the liver and internal organs of fish. Ingesting blue-green algae toxins can lead to serious illness.
Water from the affected water body should not be used for drinking, cooking or other domestic uses. Boiling the affected water will not make it safe for use.
For any health issues experienced after contact with blue-green algae affected water please seek medical advice immediately.
Irrigators are encouraged to take extra care to avoid spray drift, the pooling of water and inhaling mist from blue-green algae affected water. Affected water should not be sprayed onto leafy vegetables or florets, or allowed to flood pastures.
Pet owners should prevent pets from drinking or having direct contact with contaminated water.
Visitors to the area are advised that they can still enjoy other recreational activities such as bushwalking, boating and sightseeing around the water body.
Members of the public are asked to report any potential blue-green algae blooms to their local water manager.
Parks Victoria will continue to monitor conditions and will remove signage once the lake is safe for use.

  • Lake Curlip Wildlife Reserve (hunting)

    Bridge closed

Due to substantial damage caused by vandalism (fire), the bridge along the vehicle track linking Sandy Flat Road and Tabbara Road is closed.

  • Lake Eildon National Park

Gap Track - Closed between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek

    What?
Gap Track, between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek, is closed.
    • There is no vehicle access to Gap Track directly from Eildon Jaimeson Road. By vehicle, Gap Track must be accessed from Pinnacle Track (when seasonally open), Jerusalem Creek Track, and Simms Track only.
    • By vehicle, the shortest way back to the bitumen from this location is via the Simms Track connector to Eildon Jamieson Road.
    Why?
This is to protect O'Toole Creek from damage by vehicles fording the creek, as the bridge over O'Toole Creek has failed. O'Toole Creek flows directly into White Creek which is home to the critically endangered Spotted Tree Frog. Spotted Tree Frogs are threatened by loss of vegetation on creek banks, and by sediment in waterways.
    When will it be re-opened?
Gap Track, between Pinnacle Track and O’Toole Creek, will be re-opened when a bridge or protected creek crossing are installed. There is no timeframe for this replacement.
What about O’Toole Flat Camping Area
This small camping area has been re-opened. It is accessible by vehicle from Eildon Jamieson Road only, and is designed for self-sufficient visitors. It is recommended for 4WDs with small camping set-ups; long vehicles and towing vehicles are not recommended.

    Parkins Reef Walk closed

    Beehive Chimney site temporary closure

The Beehive Chimney site will be closed to the public from 24 September to mid-January while urgent repairs are undertaken.

The chimney stack was built in 1861. It provided draught for the mine’s steam boilers. Tall chimneys like this were common at quartz mines in the mid to late 1800s, however very few have survived. When mines closed, they often dismantled the chimneys and re-used or sold the bricks. This chimney is the only one of its age still standing in Victoria.

The chimney has had over 160 years of exposure to the elements and the birds causing severe weathering to the structure. And earlier inappropriate mortar repairs have contributed to recent falling bricks. A recent engineering assessment found that the chimney needed remedial works within 12-24 months to retain its structural integrity, and prevent bricks falling or collapse.

Works include repointing with traditional lime mortar and securing a metal cap to the top of the chimney to prevent rain getting in. Deconstruction of approximately 7 metres and reconstruction of approximately 3.5 metres results in an overall height reduction to the chimney. While also making it safer, this allows for bricks not used in the reconstruction to be used in repairs to the rest of the chimney stack. The currently proposed works do not exclude the possibility of future endeavours to rebuild the chimney to its current height,
Works are being undertaken under Permit 40992 issued by Heritage Victoria.

We expect work to be completed by January 2026 and the public being able to safely get up close and personal again then.

Upcoming Melbourne Water work at Maroondah Reservoir

Melbourne Water will be testing 78 ground anchors that are located within Maroondah Reservoir. Due to these works, the crest of Maroondah Reservoir will be closed from late February to mid-April 2026. Pedestrian detours will be in place during this time.

The anchors are tested every 5 years to ensure that they are still performing as designed. The testing involves using the lids to the 78 anchor heads and attaching specialised testing equipment. The equipment will apply tension on the anchors to measure the anchor force. The lids on the anchors and equipment used for undertaking the testing are heavy and require machinery to lift them safely. The path along the dam crest will be closed for the safety of the public during the works.

  • Snowy River National Park

Temporary Closures and Altered Track Conditions on the Snowy River National Park 4WD Track Network.

The steep section of the Deddick Trail between Moonkan Track and Mountain Creek which is known as the Mt Joan Staircase is in very poor condition with very deep rutting and erosion trenches.  This section of track has been deemed unsafe to drive and will remain closed to the public until further notice.

Parts of the Deddick Trail are also subject to very thick Wattle and Eucalyptus regrowth and this is particularly predominant over the Mt Gelantipy Plateau.  I this area, regrowth has encroached on the track to the point where it will damage passing vehicles and makes the track unsafe to navigate due to severely restricted sight lines and very limited opportunities to turn vehicles.

For the above reasons, Deddick Trail will be closed from the intersection with Rich Knob Track to the intersection with Bowen Track.

A through route between McKillops Bridge and Yalmy Rd exists along the Snowy Icon 4WD route via Deddick Trail, Bowen Track, Bowen Link Track, Monkeytop Track and Waratah Flat Rd. However, sections of this track network have deteriorated to the point where this route should be considered DOUBLE BLACK difficulty.  Sections of the track network will be very difficult in dry weather and should only be attempted by experienced drivers travelling in groups with high clearance, dual range 4WD vehicles carrying recovery equipment.  This route will be easier on vehicles and drivers if driven in the opposite direction to what is described in the Snowy River Icon 4WD route brochure - starting from Yalmy Rd and finishing at McKillops Bridge

The Snowy River Icon 4WD route brochure can be found on the 4WD Victoria Website at: https://www.4wdvictoria.org.au/iconic4wd/index.php/homepage/snowy-river-drive

The closure will remain in place while Parks Victoria reviews repair options.

Temporarily closer to berthing - timber northern inner landing

Following an inspection of Flinders Pier, three piles on the timber northern inner landing were identified as being in very poor condition, having further deteriorated since the last inspection.

As such Parks Victoria has temporarily closed the timber northern inner landing of Flinders Pier for berthing.

Pedestrian and fishing access will be maintained on the timber northern inner landing, and berthing is still available at the northern concrete landing and the timber southern lower landing.

We are monitoring the pier for any further deterioration so we can continue to keep visitors safe.

Apologies for any inconvenience during this time. We look forward to restoring berthing access and welcoming you back.

  • William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - Temporary Closure

William Ricketts Sanctuary was extensively damaged by a cyclogenesis storm event in June 2021. Many sculptures, buildings, pathways, and handrails were destroyed by numerous large fallen Mountain Ash trees.

Our highest priority is public and staff safety, and this site remains too dangerous for the public to enter. Works are continuing to make the Sanctuary safe for Parks Victoria and its contractors to continue the recovery process.

Recovery works continue to take place at William Ricketts Sanctuary following the storm, including the removal of large fallen and hazardous trees, perimeter fencing repairs, underground utility service reconnections and other important building, asset and facility works (including repairs to or removal of damaged buildings and associated infrastructure). Recovery works for William Ricketts Sanctuary are funded through insurance.

Parks Victoria is continuing to make the site safe to re-open, but it is going to take longer than other sites due to the sheer scale of the damage and the artistic and cultural importance of the sculptures. At this stage, there is no specific date when the Sanctuary will re-open, but it is not expected to be during 2025.

We understand it’s disappointing that William Ricketts Sanctuary remains closed, and we are grateful to the local community, our stakeholders and visitors for their patience and continued priority to keep safe by staying outside of these closed areas.

Please continue to refer to the Parks Victoria website for up-to-date information relating to closures and change of conditions.

Whilst the Sanctuary remains closed, Parks Victoria recommends visitors explore other Dandenong Ranges Garden properties, including the nearby Dandenong Ranges Botanic Garden, Pirianda Garden, Alfred Nicholas Memorial Garden or George Tindale Memorial Garden.  Further information for each garden can be found on this website.
