    Mt Pinnibar Track Partials Closure

Due to the poor condition of Mount Pinnibar Track two sections of the track  are closed. The closure is necessary due condition of the track, with sections of deep ruts and exposed bedrock making both approaches unsafe. The condition of the northern approach (which is badly rutted) is further exacerbated in wet weather and in these times it poses a real risk of significant incident due to the steep gradients. The two closures are between Walkers Road and Mount Pinnibar summit, and between Mount Gibbo Track and Tom Groggin Station. Alternative access to the Mt Pinnibar summit is via Tom Groggin Track, Shady Creek Upper Track and Mount Gibbo Track.

Works and change to access in Reedy Creek (Woolshed and McFeeters Road) section of Chiltern Mt Pilot NP

During November and December, Parks Victoria will continue to make changes to access in the Reedy Creek (Woolshed and McFeeters Road) area to improve visitor safety and improve park values. Camping and prospecting along Reedy Creek have become very popular, and many illegal tracks have been formed. These are not part of Parks Victoria’s formal track network and are not maintained. They are deeply rutted, unsafe and affecting environmental values in the area.
Parks Victoria has already closed off many of the illegal tracks and have better defined the camping areas. These tracks will be re-vegetated. Access roads into the popular camping and prospecting areas along Reedy Creek (which are part of the formal track network) will be improved.
Prospecting is still allowed in Reedy Creek and in other designated areas of Chiltern Mt Pilot National Park, for prospectors who hold a current Miner’s Right. We ask that people respect the closures put in place and only use the authorised track network to ensure Reedy Creek remains a special place for all visitors.

    What?
Due to the failure of Gap Track Bridge over O'Toole Creek, the O'Toole Flat Camping Area and the section of Gap Track accessed by the Gap Track Bridge, are closed until further notice.

Temporary Closures and Altered Track Conditions on the Snowy River National Park 4WD Track Network.

The steep section of the Deddick Trail between Moonkan Track and Mountain Creek which is known as the Mt Joan Staircase is in very poor condition with very deep rutting and erosion trenches.  This section of track has been deemed unsafe to drive and will remain closed to the public until further notice.

Parts of the Deddick Trail are also subject to very thick Wattle and Eucalyptus regrowth and this is particularly predominant over the Mt Gelantipy Plateau.  I this area, regrowth has encroached on the track to the point where it will damage passing vehicles and makes the track unsafe to navigate due to severely restricted sight lines and very limited opportunities to turn vehicles.

For the above reasons, Deddick Trail will be closed from the intersection with Rich Knob Track to the intersection with Bowen Track.

A through route between McKillops Bridge and Yalmy Rd exists along the Snowy Icon 4WD route via Deddick Trail, Bowen Track, Bowen Link Track, Monkeytop Track and Waratah Flat Rd. However, sections of this track network have deteriorated to the point where this route should be considered DOUBLE BLACK difficulty.  Sections of the track network will be very difficult in dry weather and should only be attempted by experienced drivers travelling in groups with high clearance, dual range 4WD vehicles carrying recovery equipment.

It should also be noted that the Snowy Icon 4WD route has not yet been cleared of fallen timber and there is expected to be a large number of fallen treesblocking the track.  Parks Victoria will prioritise clearing access along this network of tracks however this may take several weeks to complete.

Currently there is known to be a very large tree blocking vehicle access along Waratah Flat Rd between the Waratah Flat Camping Area and the Rich Knob Track intersection.

Notice to Neighbours of Deer Control Program in Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area September 2024 – March 2025

    To the resident,
As the responsible project manager for the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area, Parks Victoria has been running a management control program for deer since 2014. Over that time over 378 deer have been removed from the Conservation Area by volunteers and contract shooters.
Each year a permit is issued by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action to manage Fallow and Sambar Deer as part of Parks Victoria’s Deer Control Program. The intent of this project is to remove deer from critical areas within the reserve and reduce deer impact on the significant environmental values.
    The deer control program:
    ·      is in line with Parks Victoria's bio-security approach to new and emerging threats;
    ·      is in accordance with Parks Victoria's Deer in Victoria's Parks and Reserves Management Framework
    ·      provides critical habitat protection to the flora and fauna values of the Yellingbo Nature Conservation Area
    ·      will reduce habitat structure damage and minimise browsing impacts on habitat regeneration and revegetation efforts by deer; and
    ·      reduce the impact of deer on neighbouring private property.
Skilled and accredited contractors will be used for the on-ground delivery component of the program within the reserve in areas highlighted on the map overleaf.
Extra safety and control measures will be put in place with public access to the affected parts of the reserve closed during shooting operations. Signs will be displayed at all official conservation area entrance points and staff/contractors will undertake a patrol to ensure no members of the public are within the conservation area prior to shooting occurring.
We will operating thermal camera drones for culling deer offers several safety benefits, particularly when compared to traditional methods. Here’s a rundown of those benefits.
    1. Enhanced Visibility: Thermal cameras can detect heat signatures, which means they work well in low-light conditions, such as early mornings or late evenings. This allows for safer operations since you can spot deer more effectively even when visibility is poor.
    2. Reduced Risk of Human Interaction: By using drones, you minimise the need for ground crews to be out in potentially hazardous environments. This reduces the risk of accidents or injuries that might occur from rough terrain, inclement weather, or encounters with wildlife.

    1. Greater Precision: Drones equipped with thermal cameras can provide a clear and detailed view of deer populations, helping operators target specific areas more accurately. This precision helps in reducing the risk of non-target species being affected and ensures that the culling process is as efficient as possible.
    2. Minimised Disturbance: Drones can operate from a distance without disturbing the surrounding environment. This is particularly beneficial in sensitive areas where minimizing disturbance to the ecosystem and other wildlife is important.
    3. Safety in Remote Areas: For areas that are difficult to access or remote, using a drone reduces the need for personnel to enter potentially dangerous or challenging terrain. This keeps field workers safer and avoids the risks associated with rugged or isolated locations.
    4. Real-Time Monitoring: The live feed from thermal cameras allows operators to monitor the situation in real time. This immediate feedback helps in making quick decisions and ensures that any issues can be addressed promptly, enhancing overall safety during operations.
By leveraging these safety benefits, thermal camera drones can make the process of deer culling more effective while keeping both human and environmental safety a top priority.
