The accessible unit at Tidal River is a self-contained, one-bedroom unit that has been designed and constructed according to current DDA standards for accommodation. 

A personal hoist and specialised bathroom equipment, such as a shower commode chair, are available to visitors free of charge. For photos and further information visit Tidal River accessibility equipment page.

The Sheoak and Wirilda cabins also offer accessible accommodation at Tidal River for visitors with mobility limitations, but not to the standard of the accessible unit.

Carpark to unit

There is parking for two standard size vehicles within a few metres to the front entrance of the accessible unit. These parking bays are on reasonably level ground and have a compacted gravel surface. The parking has been specifically allocated for this unit. There is a wide, reasonably level, compacted gravel path leading from the carpark to the front entrance of the unit.

The entrance ramp to the unit is very wide with grab railings on both sides. There is plenty of room for wheelchairs to manoeuvre when opening the front door.

The front entrance doorway is wider than a standard doorway and the door handles/latches are easy to operate and reach from a seated position.

The parking bays are located to the right of the garden area shown in the below image.

Kitchen

The kitchen is designed for visitors in wheelchairs to be able to use it independently. The kitchen bench, stove and sink can be easily reached from a seated position.

Most kitchen utensils are within easy reach. Unfortunately, there is not much room on the kitchen bench top for food preparation and visitors may have to use the kitchen table provided, if needed. The kitchen table is positioned for a visitor in a wheelchair, plus two other visitors. It can be easily moved if needed.

Laundry sink

There is a laundry sink in the corridor from the entrance coming into the kitchen. This is the only unit that has this feature. It enables visitors to hand wash clothes and rinse swimwear in clean water. There is no washing machine or dryer in the unit and visitors would have to use the amenities block in the campground. 

Lounge area

The lounge backs onto the kitchen as an open plan area. It has a large modular lounge suite and visitors seated can see views of the surrounding ranges.

Bathroom

The bathroom has an accessible shower with a fold down bench seat, accessible toilet with a right hand side grab railing and an accessible vanity basin. There is plenty of space for a wheelchair to manoeuvre.

Bedroom

The bedroom has a high low electric queen bariatric bed with knee bend. The mattress is pressure sensitive with 3 layers of foam, the top layer being memory (visco) foam. There is plenty of room for a wheelchair to manoeuvre.

There is accessible bed lighting for reading and accessible power points are provided close to the beds. 

There is also is a long, accessible bench that is ideal for reading or working from laptops. A range of accessible power points are available for recharging phones, tablets, computers and wheelchair batteries.

The bedroom has a large wardrobe for hanging clothes and there is a large shelf at the base of the wardrobe for clothes storage.

Verandah

The unit has an uncovered, outdoor verandah that allows visitors to sit outside and look at the ranges. It is accessible from the kitchen area by opening a glass sliding door.

Both the lounge room and kitchen have external glass sliding doors that can be fully opened to give visitors a feeling of being outdoors.

The verandah has an outdoor table with seating. These may be easily moved to different positions if required.

There is a covered, communal barbecue area for shared visitor use. It is located at the rear of the accessible unit and can be accessed via an accessible path. The barbecues have gas-powered hotplates.

Visitor options for use of accessible unit and adjoining standard unit

There is a standard, one-bedroom, self-contained unit located next to the accessible unit and this is physically connected to the accessible unit via a lockable corridor.

The standard unit has a standard queen sized bed and a large standard bathroom.

Visitors can book both the accessible unit and the adjoining standard unit and join them together by simply unlocking the connecting corridor.
