Plans to complete a weir at Lake Natimuk are now open for feedback from the community.

First started in 2016, the project was put on hold while the potential for impact on significant environmental values of Lake Natimuk were investigated, approval processes followed, and funding sought.

Parks Victoria has since liaised with the Lake Natimuk Foreshore Committee, Traditional Owners and relevant agencies to investigate and assess the proposed works.

The network of wetlands around Natimuk has immense environmental significance as a habitat for birds, particularly waders. Like many lakes in Australia, Lake Natimuk is ephemeral, naturally cycling through periods of being dry, periods of shallow water levels and periods of higher, deeper water levels.

In consultation with the Lake Natimuk Foreshore Committee, Parks Victoria made the decision to leave the weir’s regulating gate out of the scope of works and maintain the water level of the new weir as the same level as the old one.  

Other work since 2016 has included clarification of regulatory and governance processes and requirements, funding, asset ownership, management and insurance and government policy and best practice regarding water regulation structures and water regime management.
