Beechworth Historic Park Scenic Route

This scenic five-kilometre drive was first constructed in 1926 to provide access to the beautiful countryside near Beechworth. The drive is also popular for walking and cycling. Whatever your mode of transport, start your tour at Wodonga Road or at the Powder Magazine in Camp Street.

As you drive, ride or walk this scenic route, take note of these historic and cultural points of interest.

1. One Tree Hill, named for the single red stringy bark tree which survived the miners' need for timber.
2. Beechworth Powder Magazine, first built to hold gunpowder for mining operations and now listed by the National Trust. 
3. Granite Tors, weathered by rain, frost, wind, sun and vegetation into unusual landmarks with names like Pumpkin Rock and the Sphinx. 
4. Spring Creek Bridge, built over Spring Creek's many rock pools and seasonal drifts of wildflowers. 
5. Rocky Mountain Tunnel, constructed by the Rocky Mountain Extended Mining Company to reduce water levels and expose new gold mining sites. 
6. Newton Bridge, built in 1875 by Scottish stone masons. 
7. Chevalier's Mill, built in 1855 to supply the people of Beechworth with flour and timber. 
8. The Cascades, a spectacular series of waterfalls which spring into life after rain.
