Luxton Lagoon and Wetlands (Coolart Historic Area)

Luxton Lagoon and Wetlands is the perfect place to begin your bird watching adventures. Minsmere Hide and the wetland walks allow you to experience local wildlife, in lush habitat created by Tom Luxton in 1939. A wildlife enthusiast, Tom Luxton dammed the shallow, seasonal paperbark swamp to encourage local birdlife. Today, bird enthusiasts will not be disappointed as over 60 species of birds can be seen enjoying all the wetlands have to offer.

A number of woodland birds also frequent the area such as Yellow Robins, Superb Fairy-wrens and Honeyeaters. On warm days Blue-tongue lizards and Longnecked tortoises can be seen basking in the sun. Numerous mammals live around the wetland and nearby woodlands, but most are nocturnal and become active at dusk. However, if you look carefully you may be lucky enough to spot a koala, Swamp rat, echidna or Swamp wallaby. When the water levels drop, you can even spy the elusive Crakes, Buff-banded Rails and Lewins Rails, as these species of birds are attracted out to the muddy edges of the wetlands to feed."
