Keep your dog on lead in permitted parks

Dogs are permitted in many parks and reserves provided they are under control and on leads at all times. Visitors should keep their dog on-lead except in designated off-lead areas. Keeping your dog on a lead ensures you both have a safe park visit.

    Dog-friendly code of conduct

    • Consider other park users and ensure that dogs are always kept under effective control.
    • Always carry a lead, even when in off-lead areas.
    • Bring a friend if you wish to walk with more than two dogs.
    • Ensure children are supervised whilst near dogs, as they are vulnerable to attack.

Closure of the Goanna bay Jetty

Parks Victoria has recently closed the Goanna Bay Jetty (Mallacoota Inlet) for public safety reasons.

The closure follows condition monitoring of the jetty that raised some concerns about its safety and structural integrity. A subsequent engineering assessment confirmed that the jetty’s condition was no longer safe for visitors.

The jetty was closed on Friday 10th November and will remain so until further notice.

Please note that the Goanna Bay day visitor area remains open to the public. However visitors will not be permitted to use the jetty during the closure period and will have to rely on alternative methods of safe access such as beaching or anchoring vessels to the shoreline.

It’s important to undertake maintenance of the strategic fuel break network to reduce the rate of spread of bushfires and provide vital protection for communities.

This block sits within a Bushfire Moderation Zone, which aims to reduce the intensity, rate of spread, and ember loads from significant bushfires.

The protection of environmental, biodiversity and cultural values during all recovery and bushfire risk reduction works are a high priority.

For more information about bushfire risk reduction activities visit the FFMVic website or call 136 186.

    Grampians Autumn Planned Burning Program

    Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park Update

The Autumn planned burn program has commenced.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) have commenced the Autumn Planned Burning Program in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park and surrounding reserves.

These planned burns have been nominated and approved as part of the FFMVic three-year Joint Fuel Management Program for the Wimmera Fire District. Each burn has been designated to a year and season, though this may change depending on burn objectives and seasonal conditions. You can view the three-year plan at https://www.ffm.vic.gov.au/bushfire-fuel-and-risk-management/joint-fuel-management-program

    ·      The map attached, outlines the burns programmed for this year. Detailing the exact date and time of ignition can be difficult and the final decision to proceed may only be made on the day of the burn - once resources, weather conditions and local fuel moisture levels are deemed suitable. Once a burn is scheduled for ignition, FFMVIC will send out regular notifications.

    ·      Some of the planned burns this Autumn may involve the temporary closure of visitor sites, roads and campgrounds within Grampians Gariwerd National Park and other reserves. This may include detours or closures of hike in campgrounds along the Grampians Peaks Trail, and other vehicle-based campgrounds.
    ·      Closures will be enforced for the duration of ignition and may remain in place for some days.  Visitor sites will re-open once the burn is declared safe.
    ·      We recommend that you seek information and stay informed about the status of the planned burns scheduled near you.

    What?
Due to the failure of Gap Track Bridge over O'Toole Creek, the O'Toole Flat Camping Area and the section of Gap Track accessed by the Gap Track Bridge, are closed until further notice.

  • Lower Glenelg National Park

Glenelg River jetties underwater - Hazardous Conditions

The Glenelg River mouth is closed by a sand bank due to natural processes.  The closed mouth is causing the water level in the Glenelg River to rise, resulting in some Jetties, Landings and Boat Ramps that are attached to campsites and visitor sites to become submerged.

Sites located in the Lower Glenelg National Park and sites near the river mouth/estuary area of Discovery Bay Coastal Park are impacted.  Campsites are not currently impacted, only the waterway assets including jetties, landings, and boat ramps.

Partially submerged or submerged water based assets are hazardous to park users.  Fluctuating water levels can cause silt and mud to accumulate on deck boards causing slippery conditions.  Deck boards can become loose or dislodge when rising water puts pressure on jetties causing gaps and trip hazards that cannot be seen underwater.

Park users including water craft users are advised not to use partially or submerged jetties and landings for their safety.

Keep your dog on lead in permitted parks

Dogs are permitted in many parks and reserves provided they are under control and on leads at all times. Visitors should keep their dog on-lead except in designated off-lead areas. Keeping your dog on a lead ensures you both have a safe park visit.
    • Poison baits may be laid to control foxes or other feral animals. Baits can be fatal to dogs.
    • Even if your dog is friendly, other dogs may not be.
    • Your dog can catch parasites (such as fleas and ticks) from wildlife.
    • Snake bites are a real risk in natural areas such as parks.
    • Wildlife such as kangaroos and koalas will defend themselves if threatened by a dog and can cause significant injury to or the death of your dog.

    • Ensure your dog’s identification, registration and vaccinations are up to date.
    • Minimise any disturbance to native fauna, including birdlife in the park.
    • Clean up after your dog and take all rubbish home.

Rangers will be checking for this information.

If you are unable to log in to the booking portal phone Parks Victoria Customer Service on 13 19 63.

Fees and Changes schedule 2023/24 – 2024/25 - “For vehicle-accessible campsites, one vehicle per campsite is included in the permit fee. Additional vehicle charges apply for each additional vehicle, charged on a per-night basis.”

Vehicle registration numbers and payment of additional vehicles is important:
    - minimising the number of vehicles per site and throughout the campground reduces the overall impact of dust and vegetation damage, increases visitor amenity (less noise, looks and feels like a campground rather than a carpark) and for the safety of visitors (walking and riding around the campground)
    - risk management - the Park is closed the evening prior to declared Catastrophic Fire days. It is easier to contact people if vehicles are registered.

All vehicles must be parked on the footprint of your campsite (except for the walk-in sites). If your vehicle(s) do not fit, please park in front of the stone hut or in the parking area near the canoe launch area. Thankyou.

  • Wallenjoe Swamp Wildlife Reserve (hunting)

Important safety information for duck hunting season and visitors to Wallenjoe Swamp

    ·     Wallenjoe Swamp Wildlife Reserve has been closed during March after a relatively high number of dead birds found. The swamp was monitored closely and, since the time of the initial discovery of the dead birds, there has been no further evidence of sick or dying birds at the swamp or at surrounding swamps.
    ·      Water testing for algae, pesticides and other toxins were taken and the results came back clear.
    ·      It is likely that we have seen the aftermath of a bird death event of an unknown cause. However, it is important for duck hunters to remain cautious and follow safety precautions.
o   Hunters should never harvest birds that appear to be sick or are dying, and never consume if any portion of the game looks or smells bad.
o   Dead wildlife may contain toxin levels that once consumed could harm other animals, including pets.
o   Do not handle dead birds or fish with your bare hands. Always wear rubber, plastic, or disposable gloves.
o   Remove and discard intestines soon after harvesting and avoid direct contact with the intestinal contents.
o   Keep harvested waterfowl cool (either with ice or refrigerated) below 7.5°C until butchered, then refrigerate or freeze.
o   Do not eat undercooked or improperly prepared fish or waterfowl.
o   Do not let pets eat sick or dead birds or fish.

  • William Ricketts Sanctuary

William Ricketts Sanctuary - Temporary Closure

Parks Victoria has fully re-opened 14 of the 17 parks impacted by a severe cyclogenesis storm event in the Dandenong and Yarra Ranges on June 9, 2021.  The storm resulted in fallen trees and branches, blocked access to roads and tracks and damage to numerous assets.

William Ricketts Sanctuary was extensively damaged, with many sculptures, buildings, pathways and handrails destroyed by numerous large fallen trees. Our highest priority is public and staff safety, and this site remains too dangerous to enter.

We are continuing to work on a plan to reopen William Ricketts Sanctuary, but it is going to take longer than other sites due to the sheer scale of the damage and the artistic and cultural importance of the sculptures.

Storm recovery works have commenced at William Ricketts Sanctuary. Initial perimeter fuel break clearing, fallen timber and hazardous tree removal works have occurred within the Sanctuary’s 13-hectare bushland block, the 2-hectare sculpture gallery and public car park. Further fallen timber, debris and boundary fencing repairs will commence shortly.

At this stage, there is no specific date when the Sanctuary will re-open, but it is not expected to be before 2024.

We are grateful to the local community, our stakeholders and visitors for their patience and continued priority to keep safe by staying outside of this closed area.

Please continue to refer to the Parks Victoria website for up-to-date information relating to closures and change of conditions.
