Choose your own adventure on the Grampians Peaks Trail

Thursday 12 October, 2023

If you have not yet experienced the iconic Grampians Peaks Trail, there are now even more ways to enjoy it. Changes to the Parks Victoria booking system means hikers now have extra flexibility to choose their own adventure along the trail.

Hikers can now walk as little or as long as they like, in whichever direction they prefer, on whatever section of the trail they most want to see. This means even more people can enjoy the spectacular landscape and tailor a walk to suit their level of fitness or time available.

Very experienced and very fit hikers who prefer to combine multiple days to complete their hike faster will also be able to do so. However, with 47 per cent of hikers saying the Grade 4 hike was harder than expected, it is important for hikers to use careful judgement if choosing this option.

A new interactive map is also making it easier for people to see upcoming availability and to decide and book their hike along the Grampians Peaks Trail.

More than 19,700 nights have been booked across the 11 unique hike-in campgrounds along the Grampians Peaks Trail since it opened in November 2021. Hikers have told us how much they love the hike, scoring it 8.9/10 in terms of recommending the trail to others.

While it is possible to walk for as little as half a day, more than 470 adventurous and experienced hikers have walked the full 164km Grampians Peaks Trail – totalling over 77,000 km.

The Grampians Peaks Trail is encouraging more visitors to enjoy the beauty of Gariwerd and support tourism, as well as local and regional businesses.

To provide more flexibility and options to access the Grampians Peaks Trail, the Victorian Government has invested $5 million to develop new and upgraded access points and trailheads along the trail.

Quotes attributable to Charlie Richardson, Parks Victoria Area Chief Ranger:

“With the trail open for almost two years, we have listened to hikers’ feedback and know how people are wanting to use the trail.”

“The original itineraries that people had to book have been removed, so hikers have complete flexibility to choose how long, how fast and in which direction they would like to hike.”

“With options from just one night, through to the full 12 nights/13 Days – this flexibility means that experienced independent hikers, or those who just want a short one-night taster of this spectacular hike, can all enjoy the Grampians Peaks Trail.”
