Altona Pier partial closure due to structural concerns
Part of Altona Pier has been closed until further notice due to structural concerns.
Recent dive inspections found that the outer section of Altona Pier, including the pier head, is not safe for public use due to failing piles and immediate closure of this section was recommended as a safety precaution while investigations are underway.
The original timber pier at Altona was built in the late 1800s, with significant repair works carried out in the 1950s. The current structure is now nearing the end of its life and has been deteriorating more rapidly in recent years, which was accelerated by recent storm damage.
The first 150 metres of the pier remains open but access may need to be further restricted. Visitors must observe local signage and not enter the closed area of the pier. Alternative locations to enjoy fishing and walking include Gem Pier, Lagoon Pier and Kerferd Road Pier.
Plans for a new pier are well underway, funded through the Victorian Government's $24 million Piers and Jetties Stimulus Package. Construction is set to commence in the first half of 2022, with the new pier expected to be welcoming visitors by late 2023.
“We acknowledge the partial closure of Altona Pier will be disappointing to the local community, however, safety has and will always be the primary focus for Parks Victoria” explains District Manager Port Phillip and Western Port, Graeme Davis.
